Default Compaq Presario R3000 CPU speed

I have had this laptop for 6months and never looked at the speed of the CPU, but today i opened up My Computer > Properties. This is what i found:

Can anyone tell me why a 3200+ CPU is running at 797 MHz? This had got me confused, all i have done to try and fix it is restore the BIOS to default.

If anyone could help me that would be great.

It'll just be running slower becuase it doesn't need to run fast. Most mobile CPUs do that (SpeedStep for Intel ones, PowerNow for AMD ones, although AMD may have replaced that with Cool&Quiet now). Try running Prime95 on it - that should push the CPU speed back up to normal.

Or change the power management profile off "laptop/portable", and windows will disable the frequency scaling.
Also, some laptops have BIOS settings that reduce the max speed so battery lasts longer.

The software required Win95 or better, so I installed Linux.
Question marks are the new full stop?

Thanks, I checked the BIOS there was nothing in there to do with power management. I also ran a game of Q3 with 8 or so bots, pushing the CPU to 99-100% and still it did not change.
