Screen back(side?)lighting has bit the dust I think....
If I shine a flashlight at the screen, I can still see windows/firefox, etc.... but it's just incredibly dark. Not sure if notebook screens have backlighting or something, but I think that might be the problem.... Dell Inspiron 600m Anyone here want to fix it for me ? It's just only out of warranty.... Will pay, as long as cheaper than Dell Service..... Melbourne prefered.... Thanks.... ( of course, also toying with the idea of buying a new one, anyone wanna buy this for cheap ?? )

That's called backlit. Not sure where can you get this. Maybe ebay?
Replacing backlits requires time and patience. Not a fun though..

could be just the inverter which is usually pretty easy to replace as long as you can find the right one

And yes, it'll either be an inverter (which is relatively simple), or a backlight (which is a cathode in the actual LCD panel, and not so simple).

Not necessarily.
Check out this page: http://search.ebay.com/search/search...%26catref%3DC6 There's a rough indication of your price to fix for both inverter and lcd panel (though it's the US site, so remember it's not AUD yet)

Have you tried reseating the flex cable on the m/b and the back of the LCD i know in my travels as a dell technician they dont seat them correctly from the factory and a reseating makes them work again , however it could also be the backlights are screwed.

it could be many problems including inverter, backlight, motherboard. I had the same problem. Was quoted 300 to fix. Ended up not bothering.

i know it might sound silly... but when i worked at dick smith's, i had a lady come in with a notebook doing the exact same thing. five minutes of screwing around with the torch while fiddling with the laptop power settings solved the problem. it had managed to set it self to absolute power saving mode which included the LCD. so the backlight was permenantly off unless you told it otherwise.
always worth a look i guess.
