Default The OCAU Bass Player Thread

Seeing as the "Guitar" players thread is filled with so much guitar related stuff, "and rightfully so". I thought i'd start a thread for the bass players of OCAU.

Well, here is my first post for this thread, and it is the news of my purchase of a mid 80's Made in Japan Squire Fretless P-Bass!

Well, I dont know how many of you read my review of the OLP MM2 Stingray I did, but I really did not like that guitar at all in the end. I felt no attachment or connection to it like I do with my Geddy. So back to the shop it went for a refund.

Luckily I went to my normal outlet for all my bass related gear and they had this beautiful (to me) mid 80's Fender Squire JV Series P-Bass. Maple fretboard, fretless with a DiMarzio P replacement.

I pulled this beauty off the wall, and I knew I had found another keeper as soon as I plugged it in. It felt and sounded beautiful.

This "Squire" feels like it has been built as well as my Geddy and this thing looks like it has been beaten around the bush a bit. The neckpocket is just NO GAPS. Everything about this bass screams BUILT LIKE A BRICK.

All for the BARGAIN price of AU$450. I thought to myself whilst at the counter, WHY NOT A SET OF FLATS AS WELL?! So I bought a set of Fender 9050's. I read about how these things are like bridge cables, so I got the tech there to install the strings onto this bass, and yes it did need a setup after he put those on. Quote "its a different animal with these on". The neck had quite a bit of backbow with these on. So the truss rod got adjusted, turns out the bridge was too corroded to adjust the action/intonation so a couple of the saddles were replaced. The tone knob was tightened as it was a bit loose, input jack replaced, as it was a bit dodgy. All for the wonderful price of AU$450.

I love this thing to pieces. NOW FOR THE PICTURES:

Now, I dont know what to do with this? :crying: . Do I restore it? For example.

New pickguard
New knobs
Bridge ashtray?
New tuners (easily worst part of the bass)?
new gotoh bridge?

Or should I keep it the way it is?

Such a hard decision. But I love this baby all the same.

So much thump, so much lowend, so much awesome.

ahha, perfect.

i have a rather wierd request. theres a Fender 1983 Jazz bass at the bass Centre in melborne second hand that i'm very interested in. Is it possible that maybe someone from melborne could have a look at it for me, and let me know of its condition/ how it plays.

i know i should really be trying out basses before i buy, but this bass is rather perfect(has D tuner, and vol/tone knobs)

It has lots of uses, especially in RnB, Jazz, Soul, Slow Rock. Heaps of uses, it is very useful in songs where you really want a really organic sound.

Not sure if you have the song but download "Pearl Jam - Oceans" the majority of the "Ten" album was recorded with a Fretless, so it also has a albeit uncommon place in rock.

If someone has any more examples, of a song that shows a great example of how a fretless can sound post them, I cant think of any more atm.

I am what some people could refer to as a bass god. I put a new set of strings on my Ibanez SRX300 this morning and mate, it is bass action time.

I'm thinking about wiring up the neck humbucker so I can switch between single and double coil via a push-ull arrangement with the balance knob because I'm a single-coil man at heart. (Yes, I probably should have taken that into consideration before buying a bass with two humbuckers.)

They're heaps of fun to play, that's for sure.

My bass is an ibanez SR500, pretty mid/low range but i can't find a decent replacement for less than a few thousand. Other one is my first ashton bass, which i de-fretted and changed the pickup to a musicman like humbucker. Dunno what it is because i did it so many years ago. These plug into a behringer ultrabass 450watt head, which isn't quality, but it was the cheapest head i could find. I normally go through a DI anyway.

Not really outrageous gear like my guitar stuff, but it does the job. Funny seeing as my guitar only gets home play and the bass is what goes out jamming/gigging.

I have the same Behringer head, and I find its really quite great for the price. It provides a solid tone, I think its a bit under powered for its rating, but overall its a head thats built like a tank and is awesome quality.

What cab you running it through?

Also in terms of finding a great bass for under a grand, try going Used, really. You can find some great bargains in the used market.

i nearly got the 450w behringer setup but damn, after hearing the woogie and seeing the pile of tradeins (ampeg/ashdown/marshall etc) i just wouldnt get anything else.
any of you guys ever heard of woogie amps?
whats the behringer sound like anyway, ive got an ultrabass1200 (120w combo) i was going to use it as a bedroom prac amp but it sounds like arse after playing on the woogie. i know im crapping on about it but fuck have a listen and you will be too. i have no hesitation saying it sounds better than a lot of other cabs ive heard that are 4x the price.

I was about to ask you after seeing your pics wtf is Woogie? Ive never heard of Woogie in my life before. Is it some cheap knock off a Mesa/Boogie amp?

Also what bass and cab is that?

Im playing my bass through my 20w guitar amp. It sounds like shit, and ruined my clean sound Oh well, doesn't matter, amp was given to me anyway

Behringer bass amps aren't too bad, havent used one but seen a bass player use one and doesn't sound too bad.

Well for the price its pretty awesome. And i agree that unlike a lot of berry stuff, this thing is actually build solid! haha. i'm actually running through a marshall 1960A cab, lol. I was gonna buy a berry cab, but this thing sounds better. And yeh its for guitar, but clearly i don't care .

Na i love my bass, i was just saying i can't find a better one for less than a fortune. I buy heaps of guitar gear second, heck, my head, cab, and one of my RG's are second hand! I remember buying my second bass amp, a peavey one from ebay for $400 inc shipping. And when i upgraded a year late, i got $550 trade in at the local music store.

thats where people go wrong, they think its some cheap knockoff
they are hand made by frankie at adelaide custom music, like i said you put this beside other head/cabs, youd be laughing at the svt, mesa
whatever, theres a huge pile there of tradeins
its a 580w tube/valve head the cab is also made by frankie (celestion speakers) head has outputs for 2 quad boxes to run full power.
with this on 3/3 (3 volume, 3 master volume) its louder than my 120w behringer flat out and you cant even compare sound quality.
my bass is a washburn rb2502 (active pickups) i also have the boss gt6b and a boss CEB-3 bass chorus.
with this cab on 5/5 (half volume) it would be more than loud enough for a large gig without losing any sound quality at all. add another quadbox and your band would hate you.

sorry, its a hybrid. (2 tubes for preamp)
http://reviews.harmony-central.com/r...p/brand/Woogie
edit, holy crap, i didnt know it was 550w per channel, so yer apparently my head is 1100w when i add another quad box.
*dances around* fuck yer.
