I use both depending on what i am doing.. sometimes the cross-fader with volumes up.. sometimes the volumes with the cross-fader stuck in the middle.. sometimes a mix of both whilst buggering around with the hi/mid/lo-pass filters.

But i do things a bit weird.. sometimes i'll swap methods depending on what genre i am playing, sometimes i will just do it based on my mood (angry/hard set i just flick the cross-fader about and leave the volumes up, chilling out i play with the volumes more.. like i said.. i'm weird.. ).

Not sure about how to hook your computer up to the mixer but Audacity is a good program for recording.. or so i hear.

well due to current low budget etc.
it looks like i will be purchasing the Behringer BCD2000 for a start including 2 Serato Control Vinyls. It will be used with Djdecks.

My main worry at the moment is the laptop.
I have a Toshiba P3 766mhz 256mb ram laptop.
How well do you think it is going to perform with a fresh install of windows?

Thanks

edit:
If anyone has a BCD2000 for sale, please pm me :-)

Havent used DJdecks software before but i have SSL.

I could try and hunt down an old laptop (i think my parents have a p3-900 somewhere) and try and run SSL on it and see what happens if you like when i get back to perth (i get back thursday night.. so friday-saturday-ish i could do it if you want)? Then again not sure how much help that would be to you...

Also, got an sms from a mate in london telling me to check out some decks..

"Kam DDX 5000's"

Cant find anywhere in australia that has them though.. anyone else heard of them before (got plenty of UK hits.. nowhere else though).

well my x-fader isnt the best so i mainly use it to 'cut' whereas ill use the channel faders to actually fade tracks in or out.
i usually endup using both tho.
ill be fading a track in or out, and once its sorta halfway i might start to cut it in n out a few times

p.s if anyone has an amp with more grunt than the dse for under $200 im interested.

Do any other DJs in this thread play out in clubs?
What are your thoughts on "playing the music for your timeslot" vs playing what you want??

I was faced with this last night, I had an earlier set, but wanted to play something more suitable for 12 - 1am, not earlier on in the night. I ended up playing what I wanted and had people dancing before 9pm so that was a good effort, but I feel that I should of played something a bit more mellow..

I'm looking at becoming a DJ, not the type who uses the scratch disc's, but one with a PC/laptop and a library of music on play lists.

Spoke to one in my town and he said he turned down 8 this weekend because he had too much on.

Whats the go with equipment and Software - also what the go with the music. do i need a License or something

That Mixer is horrible horrible horrible. Just don't even bother with it.
And if you are looting at being a Laptop DJ, why are you looking at a mixer?
There are a few cheap USB mixers out there for software like Traktor, and Virtual DJ (Such as the Behringer Mixer). That is more what you want if you want to do Laptop mixing.
That is the cheaper option, otherwise a Allen Hearth is the best option, http://www.storedj.com.au/products/product.php?id=993 . although it is pricey.

as licensing goes, you have to buy the tracks you mix.

I've played in few clubs a few years ago, unfortunately due to my previous job I was unable to play, I'm trying to get my act together again now that my new job offers more flexibilty.

I never cared what time I was playing, I prep my sets before going live regardless of time, I play what I want to play either way, never really considered it to be a problem.

Ok so if i'm just running music through the Amp to the speakers i don't need a mixer, how do i fade out one song and fade in another

I have no idea how to mix music and i'm not about to learn, so ill just stick to playing music from Mp'3

If i download the music from a site and pay for it, what license do i need to become a DJ?

This really depends on how much money u wanna pour into djing. You could go down the ableton + midi controller set up, or tracktor.

As for getting a xone3d. Thats just overkill. Something like this could work for you click and a decent soundcard.
Download some videos of sasha to see ableton in action. Or get onto ta, especially the dj booth and read read read! ta

having said all that i'd still reccomend a mixer + cdj set up.

I have 2 1000mk2's and a xone 62. But you'd need nothing more than a djm400 and 2 cdj200.
