Default * The Guitar Effects Thread *

I don't know how popular this will be but lately I've been getting into the gear side of guitars, different effects, amp heads, valves and all that stuff (really annoying the guys at the local guitar shop by not buying anything yet ). If anyone wants to discuss different gear and the like feel welcome and especially pictures of the setups your using. I'm in the process of building a custom effects board (pending money) so we will see how that goes. At the moment I'm using a Fender FM65R amp and Korg AXG1500G pedal. It's really quite good and has lots of good useful features but I can't help buying more stuff and switching to seperate stompboxes may be more expensive but I can keep buying and adding to it

im starting to get into effects myself, for the past 2 years of learning guitar, I never really bothered with them except for distortion. I have borrowed a couple of effects pedals but only found myself using them once or twice. So until now, I never really bothered with effects.

Im looking at getting a Wah, a DS-1 (because I need one ) and possibly a delay.

While I've only used Boss Pedals (I own a SD-1) before I even consider a DS-1 im looking at trying out this http://www.musoscorner.com.au/site/i...2D9B6D7D763FFF
to see what kind of sound I like out of both.

Amps: My favourite tube amp would have to be the Marshall DSL100 (or 50) the gain that comes out of that amp is awesome, my kind of sound.

I recently went for a Zoom 505 II to get my first taste of multi-effects (my only previous effects pedal experience was an old and dirty overdrive I inheritted ).

I must say, i'm having a ball playing with it and trying to re-create various sounds, its helped me to have alot more fun with my playing once again.

My first pedal was a Zoom 505II for the price it was awesome, I still love the C1 Van Halen patch.

I tried a proper Wah pedal today (the JH Crybaby). Very awesome, I definatly need one but I would like to try some of the other Cry Babies first namely the Zakk Wylde, the Slash, and the Dimebag one. I had a play with the big Boss demo board I don't know if it was how it was setup up but it was cutting in and out if I had more than 3 pedals on at once, still it was good to give everything a try. I'm going to try and pick up a Metal Zone tomorow and I would like to get the Super Overdrive, the Digital Delay and the Super Chorus. I also would really like a Tube Screamer (got one you want to sell PM me ). Has anyone used the MXR pedals? Are they a lot better and worth the price over the equivilant BOSS offerings?

Effects and i go way back

Started life with a Korg AX1000G

Then i sold it for a pedal rig:
PH-3 Phaser
GE-7 Equalizer
CS-3 Compressor
DF-2 Distortion/Feedbacker

Which i later on sold for my current rack setup:
Line 6 POD Pro
Line 6 MOD Pro (blueface)
DBX 266 Compressor/Gate
Behringer 1010 MIDI Foot controller.

regret selling the PH-3, had an awesome mode called "step" which i loved, might buy one again one day just dont want to have to run pedals & rack. Had some danelectro pedals once but they wern't worth talking about.

-rift- as for the MXR pedals i've used the FUZZ and Phase pedals and they were pretty nice, most at home on a bass tho.

im yet to find and try out some behringer effects and stuff. Some of the stuff made by behringer aren't too bad.

the first stomp box i bought was a ds-1 way back when. i still have it, a japanese version and another taiwanese version.

then i got a zoom 1010 and liked it for a while but eventually the delay in switching patches got me and i moved to pedals.

currently i can be playing through these:

dunlop wahs (crybaby 95 or 535q) - the 535 gets the most use, such a versatile wah. i might buy a teese in the future just for kicks

ds-1 - japanese model

aphek peanut butter - cool overdrive box

fulltone ultimate octave - nice fuzz/octave

fulltone mini deja vibe - nice univibe clone

boss dm-3 analogue delay - warm slapback and resonation effects

boss dd-2 delay - this is usually always on, set at about 400ms

boss dd-3 delay - bit longer delay

boss ph-2, bf-2 and ch-1 - phaser, flanger and chorus but i hardly use them.

digitech whammy - bit of fun and for those rage against the machine moments

i'm currently rewiring my setup after 2 power supplies have shat themselves in the last month. i've been looking at the dc brick by dunlop. any comments on it?

Any reasons for going with the rack setup? How do you find it compared to the pedals? I thought about saving and going the rack setup but I spoke to a few much more expereinced people who went from pedals to racks and then back to pedals for various reasons. The racks are a bit pricey but right now I'm trying to avoid the "in-between" purchases and just go for the expensive stuff I really want that will hopefully last me a long time. (plus shopping for expensive stuff is much more fun )

I've got a (very) old Boss ME-6 and I love it, no super strange effects like some boxes but all the basics and 25 programable banks. The only effects that aren't 'up to scratch' are the distortion/overdrive but the amps easily pick up the slack there and I prefer it post other effects (usually). Used to have a crybaby but I think I must have 'donated' it to someone..

I'll post a pic of it so the kids can see what we used in the olden days when I add my guitar to the other thread...eventually

99% of the time I run straight into my amp, via a Morley Bad Horsey Wah and an Arion tuner pedal.

Back in 1991 I used to run a Korg A5 (still have it) which isn't a bad unit, but only had 6 user definable patches. I shifted over to a DS-1 and a tubescreamer and crybaby for about 6 years until I got my marshall and left it at that.

I do have Berry's GDI-21 which is ok, but I haven't played it through an amp yet, just DI recording (I used it on the solo to End Of Species on the LGT site).

I wouldn't mind getting a compressor limiter so I can run the bass direct into the board at gigs and not worry about hitting the bass too hard, and I wouldn't mind replacing the Arion with a chromatic tuner. Probably get berries in both cases.

Much better, the recallability of patches is far better than pedals, i can change amp channels (distortion, theres 2 switching circuits on the foot controller) reverb, delay, modulation, amp simulator, EQ and other FX independantly or all at once, just depends what i have programmed into each patch.

Yeah if your serious about giging live or home recording the flexability of rackmounted FX is far above pedals. Also because all your signal is contained near the amp theres less long cable runs and less chance of noise, and in the POD for instance you get more inputs and outputs in the rack than the XT live version.
