Default Dual link DVI laptops

Hi Guys

Recently purchased a 30inch dell and am looking for a laptop (not the macbook pro) to go with it

Any suggestions?? Just looking for something that will do the full res and not really anything for gaming

Thanks

Whilst there are now quite a few laptops with DVI, I haven't seen dual-link mentioned for ANY of the models listed below. My gut feeling is that the models with X1600+ Go7700+ graphics are the best prospects. You'll probably have to contact the distributors ... good luck ... :-/

For such a large monitor, most of the above gfx cards that ajax mentioned are not going to be able to support a good resolution nor at a decent frame rate.

I think you are going to have to go for a SLI laptop or at the bare minimum a 7900 GTX Go.

For a single card setup I would recommend a laptop with a 7950GTX Go.

and for most of the SLI setups, it should be able to handle that beastly monitor.

Since you got that helluva monitor, I'm assuming you have the funds to purchase an equally impressive laptop.
Try visiting:
www.alienware.com.au (Dell owned)
for some nice SLI setups.

I'm sure SLATYE (when he comes online) should be able to give you some more recommendations in terms of cards and retail sites.

He mentioned in the original post that it doesn't need to be able to run games on the 30" LCD - just 2D.

Even finding DVI on laptops isn't exactly common yet - so I wouldn't be expecting many with dual-link DVI. As above, laptops with the X1K and Geforce 7 series of GPUs would be the best bets (since those GPUs do support dual-link).

I've heard that some Acer models have DL-DVI, but I can't find which ones in particular.

For myself I'd say not necessarily. In some respects it is more important for me to have such connectivity (not all out 3D grunt) in a compact, mid-spec machine. If I have a 24" or 30" primary monitor at home, a 17" laptop becomes a portability liability.

Yeah that's basically what I'm after - something reasonably portable (14 inch or so) that can run the display.. I don't play games so 3D performance is a non issue for me

It might be better to get a small laptop (something like Dell's D620 or D420) and a docking station which includes expansion slots. I don't know if you can get PCI video cards with DL-DVI, but there may be docking stations with PCIe too (and you can definitely get PCIe 1x cards with DL-DVI).

I'm quite sure the apple mac books will allow 30" displays, because they build 30" screens like dell.

Not that im saying that you should actually buy a macbook, I'm just speculating.

don't blame me if you don't get a gfx card that doesn't fulfil your request.
I still say go for the high end gfx card even though you're not gaming, as you really do need a card that supports 2560 x 1600

Not blaming anyone.. just thought someone could point me in the right direction.. yeah if i cant find anything basic its not a big issue either, i'll spring for the macbook pro and run windows on it

Would prefer to save myself the $ though..

Might give Asus a call and see if they know whether their A8J (the one with the x1700) supports DL DVI.. fingers crossed

Was there any reason you aren't considering the Dell laptops?
You could've haggled a better price for both? Either of the 9400 and M1710 (with correct card) would meet your needs.

You might want to get a barebone laptop then.
i can only think of one brand at the moment, Clevo, but i'm sure there's others.

You pick the chassis/screen (in your case a 12"), then source all your other components - gfx card, cpu, ram, dvd dl burner, hdd, etc

Have a look at some of the other threads in this sub-forum, there's lots of sites that ppl have mentioned that are quite notable in terms of customisable laptops.

A quick update:

Anandtech's review of the Asus A8JS (http://www.anandtech.com/mobile/showdoc.aspx?i=2899&p=3) says:
Quote:
..., and we should also mention that the DVI port does not support dual-link cables/resolutions. That's too bad for those users who want to use the ASUS A8JS with a 30" LCD running at 2560x1600, but it's not really unexpected.
BUGGER!!! Silly, silly, Asus designers.
