Ed Mundell and Finn Ryan from the Atomic Bitchwax. Of the guitarists who I like to listen to for inspiration, they're the only ones who didn't start their careers 40 years ago.

Rock, I guess. Stoner-ey stuff. Mundell's earlier stuff in Monster Magnet is fairly psychadelic/space-rock stuff, Ryan's in Core is a sort of strange jazz/blues/stoner amalgam, and in Bitchwax it's straight up, riff-centric rock, with the occasional timing trick, a bit of shredding that doesn't completely overwhelm the band, and a killer rhythm section.

Acoustic fingerstyle players must check out Australia's own Tommy Emmanuel.

how about some non shredder guitarists?
Junior Kimbrough Albert King Stevie Ray Vaughan (if you haven't heard of him you are living under a rock) Buddy Guy so many other great blues guitarists I can't be bothered mentioning. Not to get flamed and step on anyones toes but I find metal guitarist boring. Boring in terms of tone (what tone? its distortion+++, you can't actually hear the wood of the guitar as an intrument, sure a bit of crunch is nice, but that nice overdriven tube amp crunch not something that sounds like a tin can, the guitars might aswell be made out of metal), technique and style (it sounds all the same to me, no feeling). Like I said i'm not trying to flame, just adding who I would rate as inspirational guitarists. Last edited by marty_s13; 7th November 2006 at 10:48 AM. |

Yeah, sorry those guys are on my list too, i had a bit of mental blank.
I find technicality as an inspiration. I know how alot of people would say thats its all distortion, but some of the players like van halen, steve vai, all have amazing tone and along with marty friedman, if you listen to their solo works. i wouldnt restrict myself to having an approach like "tone sucks, all repetitive" because i like the music too. I can tell the difference between players, and you can tell when someones ripping stuff off. its like something im used too. Alot the blues players are repetitive in my experience, and just by playing the blues scale, i can probably get the rest of the song into my head. Yeah im not trying to flame to, but you can see alot motion in alot of players, that shred, look at alex skolnick, and marty friedman (lol soz hes my favourite player) and they were sick and tired of fitting that "no feeling" stereotype that metal players get. Alex plays in a fusion band now, and marty plays oriental, and j-pop music. and jason beckers perspective to call un-emotional would deserve a slap in the face. Whereas i cant really tell the emotion out in alot of blues players like buddy guy, unless i look at there faces on stage. But thats just me. Another i forgot to put down is eric johnson.

alot of the emotional expression in blues guitar is in how the notes are played. with whisper quiet notes and tentative plucks moving into stinging full note bends etc...
heck, quality blues is pretty much all that. improvisational phrasing. its not what you say, its how you say it. that works for blues vocalists and guitarists alike.

Ben Folds for sure. As a piano player and a vocalist, he is totally inspiring, got the sheet music for 2 albums, and as a bass player, the bassist from Ben Folds Five has inspired me to practice more!!
Brilliant! |

I didn't necessarily say blues is "better" just it had more feeling and emotion. I understand the argument that all comments can be applied to all music but look at these clips and judge for yourself...
