The thing I love about OSX is that since getting the mbp, I have never rebooted the machine, even after installing software, updates etc and it still feels as fast as when I pulls it out of the box.

the other thing that I have noticed is that it uses all of the available system ram to its max. The ram is always full (and I'm presuming that its cacheing everything it can)... with a windows machine, it's hard to get the system to suck up all the ram, esp with 2GB.

For those that have used Linux before, I think it just feels like a quality OS, bit like linux but with application support

Edit: BTW get Parallels if you need Windows specific applications. I use exchange at work, and find that Outlook runs better under emulation, that the Mac version of office.

My gf was after a new notebook a few months ago so I recommended she get a macbook. After playing with hers for a bit I decided to replace my XP notebook with a macbook too. I got mine last week (the same day they announced the new ones GRRRR).

I'm very happy with it so far although seeing as though I have been exposed to Mac OSX for a grand total of one week I'm obviously still finding my feet.

Comments from a long time Windows user who has just switched.

1. The OS is beautiful. Everything just looks so nice and swish. Everything seems so robust and professional. Build quality also seems much better than any other notebook I have ever used.

2. No right mouse button is kinda weird. Most of the time it is irrelevant as you can just just 'double finger' tap to do the same thing, but it can just get a bit tricky once you start doing mouse gestures in firefox etc. Two finger scrolling is fantastic though.

3. I'm sure this is just my n00bness but it's hard to get used to finder after using Windows explorer for so long, it just seems completely dumbed down. I have all the same networking issues as akashra. ie no title bar to tell me the current location. Network shares work 'most' of the time. I cant find any way to permenantly map them etc.

4. I havent used bootcamp but I'm trying parallels which seems fine. I shouldnt have to use Windows that often anymore. I seem to have found a replacement program for most of my Windows apps. Adium for instant messaging is a great little program.

I think my main problem with switching is that I dont know any other mac users so I have noone to consult when I'm unsure about something. Sometimes I have questions that I'm sure are ridiculously simple to answer to anyone with basic mac knowledge but I have to try and find an answer online.

PS If someone wants to be my 'mac buddy' and lets me add them to my MSN list so that I have someone to query when I have mac questions I'd be greatly appreciative.

same feeling I have, standing in the apple store, I told her i "hate" her. I was practically green.

They really should have told you that core2 duo was coming out, my gf has been wanting one since sept but i told her to wait.

Apparently the first shipment of macbook core2 duo is only a small one, so they could be snapped up real quick, if "music_pirate" is lookin to get one soon

is the discolouration actually from the paint rubbing off? Because its obviously occured when the user was typing

The discolouration was from peoples sweat essentially 'eating' away at the surface material on the new macbook pros

I won't be buying one for roughly 2 months, so hopefully by then they will have a new model out for Q1 like most of the time

Go to System Preferences, Keyboard & Mouse. Under the Trackpad tab, check the 'Place two fingers on trackpad and click button for secondary click" checkbox.

Then you just hold down two fingers and click the mouse button for right-mouse button.

Here's a great tip. If you're in a finder window, or any application with a file open (Textedit, word, photoshop, youknow things like that) where the title of the window is the file you're working on or the folder which you're in, hold down the Apple (/Command) key and click on the titlebar text. It'll pop up the directory path or whatever so you know where you're at.

Nice, eh?

Edit: Also, for right-click ability, just hold control while you click. Should be common knowledge but I guess it's worthy of a mention. I just use this traditional method all the time no problems.

What did you use as a mail (and RSS if you use it) replacement?
I'm currently weighing up the advantages/disadgantages of Mail.app, Entourage and Thunderbird. Unfortunately I've been using Outlook 2007 TR2, which it seems nothing comes anywhere close to, especially for RSS support. This is pretty much one of the last apps I really need to get sorted.

Visual Studio I'll continue to use under Parallels, and I'll probably need to keep Word/Excel etc on a Parallels image... But I'm going to give SharpDevelop and a few other Mono things a go tomorrow. Eclipse I can very happily use on Mac, though I miss TortoiseSVN/TortoiseCVS.

I use both Mail and Entourage. Mail is simple, stable and fantastic in combination with Automator if you have to send a lot of stuff around. Entourage, is pretty good - the features are there and the iSync integration is pretty nice (syncing Exchange address book/cal to your phone is damn handy) although it has a tendency to be sluggish (on a 1.67ghz G4 with 1.5gb of ram) and tends to need to resync the entire mailbox if a network connection is dropped during a send/recieve.
