Default 9400 or M1710

I just went to the Dell site and priced a XPS M1710 with the 7950GTX the 7200 C2D 2GhZ processor and 1 GB of RAM and it comes to $4,187.70, does this sound about right? Also I'm not too worried about GST as I am going to buy with salary sacrifice so work will pay the GST on it. So it should only cost me about $3,807.00 or a 9400 Inspiron with 2GHz C2D processor 1GB RAM and a GO 7900 256mb card for $3280.00. I play a bit of BF2 and would mainly be using it for watching movies etc when away on work.

So any pros or cons for me guys what do you think?

9400 with 2GB RAM $3480.00, would the GPU cope with BF2 though?

7900 would jizz all over BF2 and most games for a few years to come.

The 9400 has a 17 inch monitor also, it runs 1440x900 or the top of the range 9400 runs 1920x1200, I am starting to lean towards the 9400, it has better battery life than the M1710 and doesn't look as wanky. Also it will have an extra 1 GB of RAM to compensate for the 7900 GO rather than the 7950GTX in the M1710.

I have a 9400, 2ghz C2D, 1gb 667, 7900GS and its playing the following games fine (fine for me is above 40fps) at 1920x1200 maxed (no AA, however)

CS: Source
Battlefield 2142
FlatOut 2
Supreme Commander
Unreal Tournament 2
Savage

The games that i've tested that need 1280x800 to run at 40fps+:

Need for Speed: Carbon

I salary Packaged an Inspiron 9400 with the same specs you have mentioned and i love it. I am playing BF2142, WOW, TW2 and CoH. All of these play great without a hitch. i would recommend going upto 2gb RAM, i wish i had of. Also if you go ahead with the purchase speak to someone over the phone instead of ordering of the net. I bargained down and saved an extra $200. But yeah go the 9400, you wont be disapointed

Cool man. I included 2GB of DDR2 667MHz instead of the offered 1GB of DDR2 533MHz. Now all that I have to do is order it.

Check out my sig.

I don't have a PC anymore. Only this notebook.

I'm thinking of upgrading to a core 2 duo soon. As I bit the bullet early and got the first core duo version.

The high end 9400 is the same as the XPS series without the bling and access to Creative audio hardware etc.... We even share the same BIOS. The 9400 can do it, you just need to find after market parts. As dell just wont sell you a audigy 2 for your notebook.

Hmmm reminds me have to start researching prices and availability for c2d. Cant remember what maximum cpu this can take now? Top of the current dell range I guess.

couldn't recommend a 9400 more get it.

Get 1GB of ram and upgrade it to 2gb urself it will save you around $150. (doesnt void warrenty anymore, so you can buy ur own ram and put it in urself)

Sent my boss an e-mail today of everything that I want on the 9400, so hopefully all goes well. Apparently our company uses a 3rd party that is contracted to us to buy all of our hardware from Dell and they also get some sort of corporate discount.

The Creative audio option is software (driver) NOT hardware. Just read Dell's fine print under the upgrade option.
