Default Need a Laptop $1000 max.

My friend is shopping for a new laptop, and has a budget of $1000. His needs are pretty small, using it for Uni work, which includes wireless internet, word processing, good battery life, and not much more.

What he's seen so far are a couple at Office Works, both $990:

Acer Aspire
Pentium M 1.7Ghz
256mb RAM
40GB HD
CD-RW/DVD-ROM
15.4"

Toshiba A100
Celeron 1.4Ghz
512mb RAM
40GB HD
CD-RW/DVD-ROM
15.4"

I recommended the Acer mainly because of the processor because of the good battery life offered by the Centrino, and also it's a faster processor, with a higher clock speed too.

Is there anything out there which people think is a better deal?

I just noticed this Toshiba from Dick Smith, and it looks like a great deal. It's got 20GB more HD than the Acer, it's got a DVD burner, it's 14" and 2.5kg, and it's got a Core Solo 1.83Ghz.

Core Solo T1350 1.86GHz with Enhanced Intel Speedstep Technology
256MB DDR2 (533)
60GB (5400rpm) SATA
DL DVD-RW
14.1" TruBrite Widescreen XGA
5-in-1 card reader
Bluetooth V2.0 + EDR
XP Home SP2 (Windows Vista Capable)
WEIGHT - 2.5kg

And it's only $100 more.

Can someone tell me is there any difference between a Core Solo and a Pentium M Centrino?

get the Toshiba with core solo. On par with Pentium M but little better on battery.

That or the acer. The celeron one will have awful battery life.

The Toshiba's generally built better, and the lighter weight will be better for uni travels.

Ok, i realised that the Toshiba is an old model, and there's only demo stock available.
But i've since found out there's another Toshiba which is similar (Toshiba Satellite A100/Y03). The differences are:

15.4" screen
40GB HD
512mb RAM
no DVD burner
no Bluetooth

So it's not as good as the 14.1" model (Toshiba Satellite M100/500), but it's still reasonably better than the Acer, with more RAM, a better processor, and a better brand.

Ok, my friend bought it, he got this one above, the 14.1" Toshiba Satellite M100/500, the demo stock from Dick Smith.
He said it was in perfect condition, and paid the $1096 for it (bargain), but he got them to throw in a free bag, and an extra 2 years warranty (3 total), which is about $210 extra value.

So he was really happy.
