Default Empower power plugs

I'll be flying Cathay Pacific soon, and I realised that they have Empower power points on the plane so I can use my laptop onboard.

Now I was just wondering what I needed. I have the standard AC power plug that comes with the laptop, but I need some kind of adapter don't I? If so, could someone please post a link up because I'm having trouble finding them online, and advise me on what type of adapter I actually need

Cheers for the help!

I think you will actually need a DC power adaptor, like a Kensington, or a Targus one. I don't think it takes that standard AC power adaptor

These are the Kensington ones. They are anywhere adaptors (AC/DC) Depending on the power requirements you need, the 70W one is a bit bigger than a credit card, and the 120W one is much bigger. They come with a standard power cable, and another cable for the cigarette lighter in the car. However, you can unplug the cigarette lighter head and that is the Empower airline head.

The Targus ones would be pretty similar. Otherwise, you can go for the DC ones only.

I thought they would be cheaper. Since I don't travel much, I think it might be a bit of a waste spending that kind of money on a one-off thing. I'll think about it though, since I would definitely want my laptop on the plane!

They probably would work, but you might need to find an empower connector for it though

You can buy the empowering adaptors on the plane yea?

So what actually plugs into it? A cigarette lighter?
Cause I'm going overseas as well and I have a car charger and a normal power block.

Digging up my old thread again.

This extract is taken from the Cathay Pacific website:

Quote:
Need to keep your laptop computer running at full speed onboard? We offer you inflight laptop power! This service* is available to all passengers in First, Business and selected Economy Class. Inflight laptop power is available to passengers on a shared basis in Economy Class. The power output is 15 volt DC (75 watts) or 110 volt AC (100 watts)**.

When travelling on aircraft equipped with DC power, you need to have your own universal air power adaptor that plugs into an "empower" socket. This is different from your terrestrial power charger, and can be purchased inflight or on the ground at any major computer store.

AC power sockets are receptacle for US 2 or 3 pins plug and European standard. It is suitable for most multi-plug adaptors commonly used by travellers and no transformer is required.

* Progressively introduced in our entire fleet.
** Enquire about availability when you check-in for your Cathay Pacific flight
I'm probably going to get an empower adapter, where one end is the empower end, and the other is where I plug the cigarette lighter end in. I'm also going to get a "AC to DC adapter" as well which probides that cigarette lighter end.

My question this time is, on the MSY price list, there's the "RITMO 90W/120W universal notebook AC to DC adapter". From the information from the Cathay Pacific website, which power rating adapter do I need? The 90W or 120W?

depends on how much power your notebook needs. that power rating is for the output not input

From the back of my laptop, DC 15V and 5.0A, so I techniquely need 75W.

I'm therefore assuming 90W will be sufficient?

EDIT: My new understanding is that, I need an adapter which supplies the 15V but the current doesn't really matter. Is that correct?

pretty much, as long as your voltage is ok you're set.

The wattage will just make your battery charge faster.

Unless you have a Core2Duo, a 90W or even a 75W should be pretty much OK.
