Default Sony Vaio TX47 - Core Solo

Hey all,

A friend of mine is looking for a new laptop, and the Sony Vaio TX47 is one that keeps coming back into the discussions.

The Sony is a great looking, tiny laptop (11.1 inch screen) with unbelievable battery life.
The only problem I see is that is has a 1.2Ghz processor (Core Solo).

The laptop will be used for basic word processing, email, internet and maybe a bit of book keeping for work - no fancy games, or graphics required.

I'm not sure whether it'd be better to push her to go for a Core Duo laptop, as will need to think down the track to Vista I suppose.

Appreciate any thoughts and comments you guys have. If the laptop fits all her requirements, do you see the Core Solo as being a huge disadvantage even though the usage requirements are quite minimal?

What does Vista has anything to do with how the user intend to use the laptop apart from looking cool with extra money spent on OS upgrade?

Yeh, but still would like to have that option open. - I think the Vista upgrade is even coming free with the laptop.

I suppose the question I'm asking is whether a Pentium 1.2 Ghz (Solo) processor will be enough to run general tasks on Windows XP, and if a Vista upgrade was wanted later, would the processor be enough? (1GB of RAM).

The laptop (or CPU, to be more specific) in question should handle intended tasks in Windows XP without problems.

It will run Vista, but due to the CPU speed and onboard Intel graphics, most Vista advance graphics options will need to be turned off/down. It's better to stick to Windows XP if there's really nothing to gain in upgrading to Vista for the user.

Also like to add: there's most likely a discount on upgrade to Vista for laptops sold with Windows XP at the moment. It's unlikely to be free.

Check this out.

While it sounds pretty sweet:

Quote:
Sony will provide the upgrade service to Windows® Vista™ OS for Windows® Vista™ Capable PC.
You need to scroll to the bottom of the page and read the fine print:

Quote:
Windows® Vista™ Upgrade Kit must be purchased for applicable upgrade.

thanks for your comments Max.

True, there isn't really much point to upgrading to Vista. XP SP2 is quite a stable platform now, which I'm sure will still be appropriate for a few years to come.

I got this notebook for a client. She wanted something light, and yet powerful enough to do some internet surfing, Outlook (2003), Work and Excel.

The biggest worries were Outlook and Excel as she had a few big PSTs and several large spreadsheets with calculations.

She was coming from another Vaio with a P4M 1.6 and she is very happy with the TX47. Fast enough and yet small and light enough. She has a port replicator with a Dell monitor at home though.

Vista wasn't that much of a requirement though.
