Hi folks,

First time posting here
Anyway i got a Dell Inspiron 4150, and i am thinking of buying an external dvd burner. Can someone advise me on what's good at the moment, i am looking for an external burner can read/write both +'s and -'s. Budget is around $AU 100 but can strech to $150.

If you can handle the bulk, the best option would be to get a 5 1/4" external enclosure (USB 2.0 and/or Firewire) and a Pioneer DVR-111D.

If you shopped at MSY, would come to $84 ($39 for a Firewire and USB2.0 enclosure, and $45 for the drive). A real computer shop should still be under $100.

That way you get a decent burner, a reusable enclosure and a good drive with the Pioneer.

If it's too bulky, something like this would be ok... http://cgi.ebay.com.au/External-USB-...QQcmdZViewItem

But slimline DVD burners are generally fairly average, slower, and more expensive. Also have no idea what DVD burner that one is.

It'll work on USB 1.0, it will just be bloody slow. You're better off buying an internal one. Assuming you have the optical caddy, you should be able to install any slimline notebook drive. I have a lite-on in my i4100, works just fine.

If you don't have the caddy, you can buy one bundled with a chinese generimax drive fitted:

I just check the specs on my Dellsl laptop and it had USB 1.1, for a 4.7G disc how long do you think it would take to backup a complete dvd???
I am using 1.8G laptop, my previous machine was a 800mhz Pentium, it take around 15 mins to do a backup.

I don't think it would even burn at USB1.1.

i have a inspiron 4000 which is just like yours

you cannot burn on usb 1 - the data rate is too slow for dvd

buy a usb2.0 pcmcia card

eg. you an get a burner and case for under $100

a usb 2 card is like $25?

you know the slot in your pc that you can slide stuff into and click the switch over and over?

Thats the PCMCIA slot and its plug and play. Easy as putting in a keyboard/mouse

Hi,

You can also get a DVD burner that can replace your current optical drive in the modular bay -there are aftermarket ones suitable for the Dell C-series bays such as the ones the 4150 has, on ebay.

I have one of these drives for my 8200 and it does the job quite well.

Ok guys...can someone look at the website below to see if it would work???

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI....m=260067725947

If it does all i need to do is to buy an external enclosure for the dvd burner and of course blank dvd.

On second thoughts would going to one of Melbourne Swap Meet be a better choice??? How much am i expect to pay for the card???

Cheers
