Default Notebook hard drive upgrade

Hi All,

I currently have a 40GB 5400prm Hitachi (2.5") in my hardy IBM T40p notebook.
I am looking to upgrade this for extra capacity to probably around the 100GB mark.

Does anyone have any recommendations of brands of laptop hard drives to go for?

And is it worth going for a 7200rpm drive? Will it consume much more battery power? Do they get much louder and hotter than a 5400rpm drive?

Thanks,
nudge

From a few reviews, there isn't much difference between 5400rpm and 7200rpm laptop drives for normal general usage - eg. word processing, email, etc. If you are running 'data intensive' programs then you may want to consider a 7200rpm to save a couple of a nanoseconds

Most laptop hard drive brands have been fine, but one brand that many people recommend is Samsung. Their drives seem to be very quiet and have no problems what so ever. I have one myself and it's never missed a beat.

The only thing you should be aware of is the cache of the hdd if you are buying from a retailer. Sometimes they give you a cheaper 2Mb model.
8Mb or over should be sufficient; anything lower don't bother.

Cheers for the replies. Wow, I didn't realise laptop hard drives were so cheap now, I should have started looking months ago!

Thanks again.

Can highly recommend samsung drives. I had one in my old laptop and it was great, in my new laptop there is a WD, and it gets very hot. I'm almost tempted to replace it.
