Default Laptop Cooling Pads

Has anyone ever used one of these, the kind with a few fans that you connect via usb to the base of your laptop. Lately my laptop has become my main pc due to my wifes WoW addiction and I have been having problems with overheating, even though I clean the fans thoroughly.

I saw an aluminum one specifically designed for widescreen notebooks, I have an Inspiron 8600. Do these things help during the summer or intensive gaming, I'm getting hideous slowdowns which I guess is heat related, forcing speedstep to kick in on a hardware level.

Is this a worthy purchase, 50-70 bucks, or a big fat placebo. Anyone know any good brands?
