My mum has a cheap HP printer, and i've got a fairly cheap Canon. And i've seen that it's cheaper to buy a whole new printer just for the ink cartridges, cause some cheapo printers that come with ink cartridges included are cheapo than the 2 ink cartridges separately.
So i thought i'd just buy a new printer and keep it as a spare, or sell the printer for 5-10 bucks, or throw it away cause it's effectively worthless. But a guy at Dick Smith mentioned that he thought the included cartridges were only half filled, thus ruining the better deal. Anyone else heard this, or know it to be true? Personal experiences with new printer cartridges only lasting half as long?

the current bottom of the canon range (iP1300 & iP1700) only take one cartridge type PG-40 (black) & CL-41 (colour), and no they're not half filled when you buy the printer. Laser printers toner is generally a "starter" toner that is half filled.
Some of the older entry level models like the iP2200 had the option of high capacity cartridges PG-50 & CL-51, but i don't think the 1300 & 1700 support them. |

It's gotten even more crazy.
Now when you buy the ink and paper, they throw in the printer for free. In the current Officeworks catalog, if you purchase either the HP21/22 combo ink pack for $48 or the HP94/95 combo ink pack for $65 plus a pack of HP A6 photo paper for $10, HP gives you a HP A310 photo printer supposedly worth $179. The stupid side of it is that neither of the ink packs is compatible with the printer.

Not only did you post this in the wrong forum, it should be What/Where to Buy, but you also cross posted this in Photography.
