I dont know what section this could go in but I need a quick answer. I need to desolder to solder bulbs, I have a soldering iron but no desolder. Is there any technique or way to remove it with just a soldering iron.
EDIT: im so impatient I went ahead and just used a soldering iron and manged to get both of them basically unsoldered. One of them is a little darker but hmm hopefully it works. Will let you know how it goes :PEDIT: I AM THE GOD OF DE-SOLDERING THINGS

Aint that easy when you've never desoldered something before and what your working on is worth like $50 :P

If you want to clean it up (ie - remove the solder, rather than just the component) use a desoldering sucker and some desoldering braid - about $15 for both from DSE. Good stuff.

im having some difficulty desoldering something myself so ill just tack it onto this thread.
i have a solder sucker and that braid stuff. they work fine for removing the majority of the solder. but im trying to remove some usb ports off a pcb. and i just cant seem to get enough of the solder off to free them without breaking the board or the ports. any suggestions? |

Heat the solder to a gooey consistency, then pull? I'm no soldering genius - the best I've done is a DSE kit in highschool, but that makes sense to me.

if they have pins, and you're scraping it. Cut them off if you have access, then just remove the pins left behind.
If not, you really just have to run the iron tip back and forth across them whilst gently pulling side to side to 'crab' it off. this is assuming you can't get enough of it off with wick to completely break the join without ripping up pads. |

+1 to desoldering pump. They work good you just gota hold it real close whilst melting solder.

I've found that if you need to desolder a lot of close pins at once, just run some fresh solder over them all, then lay a strip of desolder braid over it and heat! Seems to work OK for me anyway...

It also pays to use IC sockets in the first place

thanks for the advice.
the large blob of solder sounds like it would be the simples but im a bit worried about damaging other parts on the pcb. i think ill try to cut off the bits of pins that stick out the opposite side of the pcb and the try to remove a bit more solder and pull. i managed to crab off a couple of 3 pinned parts but the usb ports have 4 pins and 2 hold down tabs all soldered down. |
