Default Bass plugged into Home stereo.

So i got my Bass today! (Thanks Vort)

And i haven't bought my amp yet. But i'm wondering... Can i plug the Bass into my Home surround sound system? It has 2 Mic inputs... I know you can do it the PC (but i need an adapter for it) but will it work? Will my stereo blow up? Will my bass die? Help wanted...

NO

Your bass will not die, but the amp/speakers will.

the amps and speakers in a home surround system are not use to the peaks of an intrument like a guitar/bass, you will clip the amp like a mofo, and the speakers will hate you for it

if your using an effects box like zoom b2 it would prob be ok as you can control volume with that. My bass goes well into my speaker system (via zoom g2.1u pedal), but its got a proper subwoofer + plenty of peak headroom.

So the volume on the bass guitar isn't enough to control the volume.

Can someone just give it to me straight as to what will happen if i plug my bass into a; 5.1 Home stereo system or a Small/largish AM/FM stereo?

Thanks

Use a stomp box in between the stereo and your bass.

It should be fine, but i'm not a bass expert.

I have used my guitar through a pedal on my stereo for ages, as it's near the computer and my amp is a bitch to move from pc room to my room. Nothing bad has happened yet, i get good bassy palm mutes, which i love.

Potentiometers will not control a speakers sound, as there is no power coming from the bass. Your stereo will have an amp, yes? Which controls the volume of the line in, which would amplify your bass.

Please correct me if i am wrong.

Yes my stereo has a big amp. Which las many things plugged into it. Which then goes to the speakers. And the Sub is inbuilt into the amp...

well, in my opinion (not neccesarily correct) all your guitar doing is providing electrical signals, much the same as an ipod would when plugged into the input jack, so it should be fine. Maybe a bass forum somewhere? Ultimate-guitar maybe?

I'm was more thinking

1. most guitars /bass etc loose all their high end/presense when volume is turned down, hence wanting a better volume control. bass guitar straight in isn't suited that for line input and mic input may clip, give it a try and see if it does.
2. without some sort of amp modelling from bass/guitar pedal it'll sound crap anyways imo
