I'm in the market for a new PDA.
Previously I used an I-mate Smartphone which was great but now I'm needing the bigger screen. The main use for the PDA is Outlook functionality (email + calendar). I do want to use it as my mobile as well. Want it to run Windows so it links up to our exchange server with no issue (have had problems with the Symbian's in the past). Which brands should I look for or avoid? I've been looking at the I-mate JAMin, but not to sure if I want to stick with I-Mate as I remember them having mega issues when they had the CDMA EVDO model come out (was a few years ago now). What are the HP's like? |

Want a keyboard? iMate JasJam / opod 838Pro 02 XDA Trion (all HTC Hermes-based devices, just different software / branding). Will run the (unofficial) WindowsMobile 6 to enhance Exchange functionality.
Don't want a keyboard? Dopod D810. HTC Trinity-based unit, built-in GPS chip, though the firmware to get hte GPS working perfectly in Australia hasn't been released yet.

Nah not keen on built-in keyboard, would rather just plug in a larger one if needed. More for receiving emails than sending them, and having my Outlook synced and with me.
Haven't look at the Dell's before, what do other people think of them? |

Subscribed to thread. I'm in the market too. My HP Ipaq RX3715 has died. I probalby won't buy another HP after that experience. Its just not reliable and thats even after Hp replaced the motherboard under warranty.
Do any PDAs come with Windows Mobile 6 yet??? |

To the best of my knowledge, no current PDAs / PDA/phone devices come with WM6 pre-loaded. But there is a WM6 "refresh" for the Hermes on the way; I just can't recall the HTC code-name at the moment

I am also keen on getting a pda, or pda/phone. I'd like one that could do 3G though, if i get a phone/pda that is.
Just don't know if there are any with particularly good screens, ie that can compete with the hx4700 or x51v (both 640x480). Reason I ask is i'd also like to be able to watch some divx's... |

If you can wait a little while - and don't mind a form-factor similar to the first-generation XDA - check out 02's XDA Flame and it's 3.6", VGA screen with dedicated nVidia graphics chip!

tumoit, from what I can see, if you are happy with 320x240, there are endless options. Most people I've heard from (on the web) are happy with their imate's. HP's seem ok if they have the features you want, and the price you want to pay.
As for me, I am back to considering the JASJAR. The only thing I am hesitating about is the new pdas just about to come out, like the flame and the htc 'athena'. Also, i think it only has usb1 and 802.11b. Other than that it looks like it will do everything I want it to. I am not too worried about size, as either way I will get a pda, so its not going to be small. Phone functions dont worry me too much. As long as it works with 'three' so I can call my friends for free, and it can make calls and sms, its fine. I don't really use my phone for the phone functions all that often. I mainly want it to make calls, send messages, have w802.11b/g and bluetooth, be capable of taking decent sized memory cards, play videos and sms... My other options are, I guess, to wait for the next batch of phones, OR buy a really small 3G phone, and something like a Dell x51v... rees, I am not really a linux fanboi, but I'd like to be able to grab my email from the soon to be setup wireless network at school/work (i teach).

I'd double-check that the JasJar can handle 3's WCDMA / UMTS 2100Mhz network (and Telstra's WCDMA / UMTS 850Mhz one if you think you might be tempted to switch at some point).
If you can wait ~6 months, we should start to see a decent crop of HTC Kaiser-based devices; think iMate JasJam / Dopod 838Pro but with native WindowsMobile 6, a faster CPU, more memory and a built-in GPS chip that works. If you want something now, I really like my Dopod 838Pro, and I've heard some good things about the HTC Trinity-based D810, though they haven't quite got its GPS chip working 100% in Au yet ...

I'd have no idea - I've never used a PDA/phone for watching videos.
Sorry!

i can help there
![]() use a Ipaq 6828 (aka Atom) Can watch all xvids/divx/wmv/ogm files with no problem, no need to resize or reduce quality either. (just have a 2gb minsd card) dont know if it will support the 4gb cards. Use a app called tmtcp player (free) or coreplayer (not so free) While i would recomment this pda/phone at the time i got it, its old now, has no 3G,BT2, WifiG, etc. would probally got with the net HTC range of phones. |

I'm lookin for a PDA too.
I need one with built in GPS, Compact flash slot, and a second memory slot of any type. I've only just started looking but struggling to find that combination so far so please tell if you know of any! Other preferable features are Wifi, no keyboard, no need for phone features. |
