I am looking for a gaming laptop too... I was thinking Alienware, but they are out of my price reach. You might find something there you are looking for.

I live in Rockhampton too ^_^

S-T-Ruggling on the old English, aye?

You would want to get 2gb RAM.

Do you want a gaming "laptop" or a gaming "benchtop"????

There is no way anyone can categorise a 17in monster to be a laptop! A laptop must be at most a 15.1in screen. Weigh significantly less than 3 kg.

Completely agree. Do you want a "portable" laptop which you can easily take and carry around, or do you want a "desktop replacement" laptop, which are usually bulky 17" things. You have to put up with the prospect of increased size, weight and inflated prices for higher levels of performance.

It'd be a good idea to get some English lessons first. Spend $1k on that, then spend $3k on the laptop.

I agree about 17" laptops. 15.4" ones aren't bad, even at around the 3kg mark (my current laptops is about that weight, and I carry it around Uni every day).

Unfortunately, 15.4" laptops tend not to have super-fast video cards. The quickest I remember seeing is a Geforce Go 7700 (or maybe a 7600GT. I can't remember which is quicker). There are 14.1" models with the same card.

For example, Asus's A8JS-4S019C-A has a 14.1" LCD, C2D T7200, and a Geforce Go 7700.

If you don't care about size, weight, or battery life then you can get a bigger laptop. P4Laptops currently offer a 17" C2D system with a Geforce Go 7950 GTX or a 20" model using a Turion64 CPU, but with SLI 7950 GTXs. Neither of those are really laptops - they're just portable desktops.

gawd I'm sick of people whinging about 3kg+ lappys. It only hurts when you've got a narrow strap biting into your shoulder. Grow some forearms you people!!!

re vid cards: there are a quite a few 15.4" with Go 7600 and X1700 for reasonable prices. IMO 512Mb of VRAM is a bit of a gimmick with midrange cards, you won't notice if you only have 256Mb. The 128-bit bus is much more of a problem re memory access anyway.

www.notebookcheck.net has a list of various lappy gfx cards and relative benchy scores. (that site suggests X1700 beats out the Go 7600) It has CPUs too. Of course they are across different models and are in no way standardised, and are synthetic benches only, but a general idea is good.

and lay off the man for his engrish, he just needs to cut down on sugar and caffeine, and not write so rabidly, and perhaps take the three seconds it takes to edit before you hit the 'post' button.

Hi. I'm interested in purchasing a laptop which I think would fall in the gaming category. I'll be leaving the laptop on for 6-8 hours at a time primarily indoors. These are the specs that are important for me

Intel C2D T7200 2GHz CPU
GPU - Minimum 256mb. Direct3D compatible with DirectX 9.0c, Performance better than NVIDIA GeForce 6800 for desktops
1gig DDR2 667MHz Memory (1x1048) or 2gig if it falls within price range
80GB 7200rpm Hard Drive
14" or 15" Display
9 cell LIon battery
Minimum 2 year warranty
3 USB 2.0 ports
WLAN 802.11a/b/g (Preferably Atheros, Intel sucketh)
Bluetooth enabled
Weight - under 3 kilos

Any recommendations regarding:

>Brand - Build quality, overheating, customer service

>Vendor - Price and monthly payment scheme

Looking to spend under 3k on a monthly payment scheme if possible.

Thanks for your time.

If I was going to buy another laptop it would probably be an Asus.

Try www.p4laptops.com.au, where you can configure any of the laptop exactly to what you want. The F3JP or A8JS fit the bill nicely once all specced out.

Pitty they are also usually stuck next to a power point.... My laptop gets 5 hours on battery life... And it still has a x1600 in it...
