Default Joybook S72 Video Overheat?

I bought one second hand on the weekend, and it seems the video card is overheating, forcing the system to shutdown, and not turn on for 10-15 minutes after that.

I took it apart (Out of warranty) and discovered that it has passive cooling on the video card too, meaning that I could literally fry an egg on the heatsink (burnt my fingers a few times). Is this a manufacturer defect? Has anybody else had this problem? Seems pretty stupid to have passive cooling dedicated graphics cards in notebooks these days, so just wondering.

I've emailed BenQ today, and expecting a reply in the next day or so, but just want to see if there is anything else that I can do to get around it (FYI, I've tried underclocking the video card but that was a no-go.)

its just a x600, and because its a mobility produces less heat. That laptop has a nice magnesium finnish so i guess that could act like a heatsink anyways.

i'd just reapply thermal grease and see if that works.

Could be the processor that could be overheating, since you mentioned its second hand and out of warranty, i'd rip it apart for some spring cleaning and re-application of some thermal grease.

Interesting. I wouldn't say that it's a "defect" (because it was obviously designed like that) - but it does sound like very poor design (my current laptop uses a proper active cooling solution which handles the GPU, chipset, and CPU).

If the GPU heatsink is getting really hot, don't bother to reapply thermal paste - the fact that the heatsink is hot means that heat is getting from the GPU to the heatsink. The problem is that it's not getting from the heatsink to the air.

Have you tried a cooling pad yet. Did wonders for heat issues with my Joybook R55. It has 7400GO and got quite hot. Wasn't sure if it was the CPU or GPU though.

Heat issues stopped after using the aluminium Zalman (Model ZM-NC1000) cooling pad.

I don't understand why everyone seems to be using laptop cooling pads. The laptop should be quite capable of keeping itself cool. If it can't, it's not fit for the intended purpose, and should be sent back. My one's had no trouble keeping cold, and it's using a Merom ES B1 stepping CPU (I gather that these do run a lot hotter than the proper retail ones).

Understand what your saying Slayte, my point about this is probably more to do with running BF2 at the highest settings I can get my GPU to run. Before I used a cooling pad I found that heat was a problem and caused either a CTD or a shutdown.

Using a cooling pad fixed the problem.

It would seem that with notepads falling in price and also including alot more bang for buck, overheating is not being looked at by the manufacturer.
