Hi all,
I'm thinking of buying a PDA as a gift for a friend from Dick Smith as I heard that they have a 7 days no questions asked returns policy? Can anyone confirm this? Cheers! |

I bought 2 MP3 players from Dick Smith just to try them out - I could get them cheaper from another store but I wanted to test them first.
I opened it, used it for a few days, then returned it. They accepted both as is. Full money back. Didn't have to be "unopened" but JUST in case your shop is different (highly unlikely) ring them anyway. P.S. I'm pretty sure it's a 14 day guarantee =)

Its a 14-day guarantee, however I think this initiative is finishing very soon. If you're thinking of doing what you're gonna do, then hurry!

Yeah i've noticed that lately as well. People are constantly returning stuff. You just have to be really strict on software, mp3 players and phones. All the rest of the stuff is OK, just it is annoying as the people are abusing it.

well i bought a laptop for $1k - and held onto it as I heard harvey norman was having a big sale.
when i returned it they said if it was opened they wouldn't refund - but the stupid thing was is that they had to open the box to check that I didn't somehow tamper with the seal to prove everything is there. grab the name of the person you buy it form - and makre sure they say yes you can return it. that way even if you can't you still have a leg to stand on. |

How does dick smith resell these items? Surely it must be a big hassle for stores when people keep returning there used stuff.

I think if you buy something and ask if it does something, and it doesnt when you get it home, you should be able to return it. I suppose everything gets abused.

It helps with some customers though, allot of the time people will be really hesitant in buying something as simple as a cable for fear it wont be long enough for what they need, so when you can say that they can return it even if they open it *shock horror* they seem to be pretty happy. They will refund anything within the 14 days, except what is stated on the in store returns policy poster (should be on/near the counter) and its also on the receipt. (Basically anything consumable cut wire, software, headphones, batteries etc) There are people that abuse the policy, e.g. buying a tool to do a certain job then bringing it back the next day, there is nothing they can do about it and if the packaging isn’t damaged and the product is still in perfect condition then they generally don’t care.

It probably also saves them having to train ther staff as much - it's much easier for the staff members to be able to say "I'm not sure, but you're welcome to take it home and try it..." than to have to learn the ins and outs of a massive range of products. Dick Smith are not a high end hi-fi store, nor a PC specialist, nor a specialist music store. They used to be a specialist electronics store, but in recent years most of the staff I've met would be hard pressed to tell a transistor from a television. I've got about a 50/50 track record of keeping the items, which given the Dick Smith markups puts them well ahead of the game. I heard from two friends who worked at different stores that the "soiled" items are mostly still sold a little above cost. Quote:
