kde is all about the candy, its what its mission is (think osx) , gnome is like windows 2000, the same old design over 4 versions major in a row.

I really don't get why people keep saying this?

It's just a few different apps slapped together.

---

I hate in the video how the guy keeps pushing its a "real" media solution because it's always playing a video in the background... they need to find a better reason then that.

I do agree that MS need to find a better way to display more channels. I don't mind how foxtel/austar lay their guide out.

Maybe it's because they've actually used linux, or hell any computer and know that things are very, very rarely as simple as 'just works' - especially when you're taking third party apps and chucking them on ill-defined hardware.

man, here you guys are getting me all excited.

when I first heard about this today I thought 'woah when did this come out? and how did I miss it?' Well I got my answer.

It may have been released 10 days ago, but the UI looks like it 'came out' in the 70's.

props to LinuxMCE for returning linux hackerdom to beatnik hippie roots

They must be new to computerwhatsits.

Generally, software written for hardware, works, crazy huh, I know.

The problem with Gnome devs, is that they don't like any form of criticisim, even constructive ones. So while KDE is blazing trails for itself. Gnome is perfectly content with its "chronic masturbation" behaviour slump. Even Linus had a bit of a tiff with them about it last month.

I reckon give it a rest, I'm sure there a philosophy thread somewhere else.

With regard to LinuxMCE, give it a chance FFS, its only day one, lets see what happens before writing it off, just because a GUI is bit dodgy, or a voiceover sounds corny.

*sheesh!*

GUI looks dodgy to me. The Gyration mouse (which isnt part of the software) makes it seem cooler than it really is.

Actually I'd have to strongly disagree with that, especially based on the experiences I've had so far with GNOME developers (who I have contacted directly with ideas and suggestions).

People may not always agree with how GNOME does things, but (like many users) I like the more user friendly approach to user interface design and find that the later GNOME versions give a far more consistent experience to the user.

In the end GNOME vs KDE is just the same as vi vs emacs, there's may right answers.

How good is the hardware support for TV tuners and Australian programming?

LinuxMCE incorporates MythTV for displaying TV. Subsequently, MythTV has excellent DVB capabilities and the Linux kernel supports a variety of commonly available TV tuners. In addition, a fellow OCAU member ltd73 has written a script that grabs TV programming data from various sources producing verbose and accurate results.

In short, it's very good

Few questions:

1. Lowest hardware someone has got HDTV working on LinuxMCE?
2. Will LinuxMCE support 1080i via VGA on an ATi Mobility 7500 (32MB)?
3. Are screen corrections/timings/porch settings available in LinuxMCE?
4. Anyone successfully using TurtleBeach Audio Advantage Micro with Linux?
5. What additional codecs are needed for it to work for Australian TV?

LinuxMCE looks really cool - but it was quite difficult getting my old laptop to run HDTV under XP, and I'd be in real trouble trying to do the same hacks on Linux. If it's as plug-and-play as the video says, it looks perfect!

Yeah that's what i'm wondering

I've got my XP MCE up and running now, and it's sweet.

I tried mythtv for about a week. Driver support was terrible and I had nothing but problems, playback kept skipping, tuner kept losing sync, the ATi drivers squashed my display by 50% etc...

I gave up and had MCE running almost perfectly within about a day

I might give this a go, but the only thing that is holding me back is that I don't want to spend another week compiling drivers from source with no guarantees that it will work. Once bitten...

Is this any different to Pluto Home? As far as I can tell Pluto is Debian based and LinuxMCE is Ubuntu based (which is itself based on Debian anyway).

Are there any other differences besides the distro used? I downloaded Pluto a couple of weeks ago and just started installing it before.
