Default PS2 - memory card info ?

Just bought myself a Playstation 2, silver slimline version ($188), mainly cause i just got a job at a video store, and i get all my rentals free, incl. games.
So i need a memory card, but can't find any information about the size of game saves, in order to make an informed decision on which mem. card to buy.
I was just going to get the cheapest, 8mb one, but i'm not sure how large the game saves are.

Anyone help me out?

Wanting to buy really soon, within the next day or two. Probably off ebay, maybe cash converters if they're cheap.

Unless annyone has one they'd like to sell? I'd prefer silver to match the console, but other would be ok if good price.

thanks

Unless you are going to be gaming really heavily, 8mb should be enough.
I actually have 2 memory cards - 1 for use the other as backup just in case saves get corrupted (and they do).

8MB should be enough unless as stated you plan on gaming a LOT (and hording your old savegames) retail on a memcard is generally $40, if you want a silver one there is a pack you might be able to find that includes a silver controller and silver memory card for $60 - which is much better than $50 for a controller and $40 for a memcard. But if you really don't want another controller its probably no value at all.

ok thanks guys, that helps, although i don't like the sound of the currupt game saves, that sucks.

I do want another controller at some stage, 8mb cards are about $25 off ebay, so depends on how much genuine controllers go for.

how do you back a card up to another one? through the PS2 itself, or computer?

There's a copy utility built into the PS2, just turn it on with no disc and go to the "Browser". Let's you access contents of each memcard and copy them across.

Also, be wary that some games use upward of 500k

yeah i just noticed when i went to play Gran Turismo 4, it said the game required 1450K, which is like a 6th of the whole card.

GT4 is probably the game requiring most memory space of any PS2 game.

GTA:SA take up a bit of memory as well, IIRC.

God of War and GOW2 both take a little over 500K.

I decided i needed to get one straight away, cause most games a memory card is a necessity unless you leave the game running while you're not playing it so you don't lose your progress.

I picked up a silver 8mb card from cash converters for $20, it had only just came in that day cause i was in the store the day before. I didn't want black, cause my console is silver. And 8mb cards on ebay are $18-$26 with postage, and silver are rare. So i was thrilled, and have been able to play Crach Bandicoot.

Edit: A silver 8mb card went for $27 with postage on ebay the other day.
