Default PS3 sales in the UK drop by an alarming 82%

It appears that the UK’s love affair with the Sony PlayStation 3 (PS3) was just a brief fling, with UK sales of Sony’s new console dropping by an alarming 82% in the second week after its launch.

Would be interesting to compare it to other console launches just to get some scope.

There can't really be a comparison made as both other console launches had massive stock shortages immediately after launch whilst there is no such shortage of PS3's in the UK.

So with no comparison the article could be said to be pretty much useless then...

Well it's true in that they sold 82% less PS3s last week than they did on launch week. That part kinda stands by itself. If someone can find some reliable statistics for both of the other console launches over a period of a few months (maybe not quite yet for the Wii) you could determine when supply outstripped demand and then make a comparison. But as the Wii and 360 were both constantly sold out during their first few months of existance (and the Wii still sold out) it is very hard to get those kinds of statistics.

Because nobody is buying the ps3.

kr0nic is pretty much right. We can't really tell anything until all consoles are no longer having stock shortages. In the Wii's case apparently they still are.

no you're an idiot

it's spelt genius, not genious

and more to the point its kind of useless to bring out facts and statistics now for the ps3. 82% drop obviously means that everyone that wanted one has got one and i'm sure if there weren't 170 odd thousand units available at launch then there would be consistent sales across the follwing weeks as supply tries to keep up with demand. Unlike the wii where people were still waiting weeks after release to get one due to limited supplies.

the way that i look at it, most of the hardcore sony ps fans have already bought one, whereas now the mums & dads and the casual gamer are waiting for it to come down in price till they buy one, and i believe its this lull thats being reflected in the sales in the uk at the moment. At $899 it's a big investment for a lot of people. when you walk into jb or harvey norman and you see a ps3 for $899 just the console and then an xbox 360 with 4 games for $699 you tell me which one a family will choose? i'd find it very difficiult to believe that they wouldn't choose the xbox.

not that i hate the ps3, i'd probably get one later on, but i'm happy with my 360 and wii.

so... really what you're trying to say is that everyone that wants one for the price it's currently offered for, has bought one?

Interesting theory...

lol if you want to sum up what i took 5 mins to type then yes...
i'm just saying that this is a pointless statistic, and the only ones that will really find it interesting are the people that hate sony or hate the ps3.

lol that was SO much easier to type then the stuff i typed before

If that's the case then it's definitely bad news for Sony. They won't be able to drop the price of the console any time soon due to the high manufacturing costs. Not without taking more of a loss per console anyway.

Yeah, I know. But as everyone's said the statistic is useless without scope. Maybe it just wasn't pay week this week over there for the majority of people. Who knows... time will tell though, if it is to fail, it will.

Question would then be, will Sony try to break back into the market, or just close this chapter of it's life?
