I typically never upgrade a Myth box after it's built. Once I get it functional, I leave it alone until I build the next one. dist-upgrading all over the shop means something invariably gets broken and then my family yell at me because nobody can watch anything for a week.

That's strange. Most people experience problems with SBS. Where are you located? Do other devices get Channel 7 reception from the same antenna?
I'm in Adelaide and my LCD tv and HD set top box which uses the same aerial as the mythbox finds all the channels fine. 7 doesn't even show up with dvb scan, all the others are nice and strong.

Have you tried different software? Kaffeine has a nice little dvb interface (including a channel scanner) which is great for troubleshooting

I'm about to start the (re)installation of my mediapc soon. Changing from old sempron 2400+ hardware to my now old pc (P4 2.8 with a nice MSI mobo).

Having used Ubuntu 6.10 previously, I will be using the new 7.04 release. It should be recommended because it is easy for people to use if they are new to linux. I was, and found it was an enjoyable experience. First boot up, and EVERYTHING was installed. No drivers or configuration of hardware needed. It makes a great base to start from.

If I get time on the weekend, I'll make a semi guide to getting Ubuntu installed and getting mythtv running on it (and the associated tvguide progs etc). It will in no way be a complete "every little step" included type thing, but it should be a good start. (I am in no way at all a linux pro ) Then other people can add stuff in The great benefit of a Wiki

There are already links to some ubuntu+mythtv guides in the wiki, so maybe check those out before you get too far in...

Re the ubuntu as the recommended distro - since you haven't actually tried any others maybe you should do so in order you can give some kind of comparison. The thing is, *all* the distros there have their pros and cons and most provide "an enjoyable experience". Just because you use it is not reason enough to give it that tag.

Gotta agree with Cleary on each distro having it's pros and cons for building a MythTV box.

I went with Gentoo, primarily because i'm a Type A Personality who likes to control the ins and outs of all facets of my computers, but most importantly, i wanted it reliable and efficient. I found with Fedora and Ubuntu that whilst great for desktops, they're bloated for things like Media Centres, including a lot of uneeded packages.

Having said that, i recently recommended to someone wanting to build a similar setup to mine that they use Ubuntu or MythDora.

I have indeed used some other distros in the past but not extensively. I can still recommend ubuntu as a great distro to use for new people whether I've used others or not. If i was to tell people not to use another one and use ubuntu instead, then yes, I should have properly tried them.. I'm just saying from my experience its a good distro to learn from Simple solution is to not list any one single distro as recommended. Just list the top 5 or so commonly used ones.

What quinn said about it being bloated may be true aswell. I use my mediapc for more than just watching tv and movies on. Its also my fileserver and webserver and whatever else i have planned for it >

So, I've switched over to Shepherd tv guide. I'm just confused about one thing.

I run "perl shepherd" as root. It says "bad idea, you should run this as a regular user". I agree to that. I try to run "perl shepherd" as a regular user. But my regular users don't have write access to /opt.

So. I've gotten shepherd configured with my root user.
Can I now safely run shepherd as a regular user, forever? Or will it occasionally require write access to /opt ?

Edit: Got it sorted. Shepherd checks for /home/$USER, /$USER and some other place for the home directory. I had mine in /.$USER so it couldn't find it, and used /opt instead

Dunno why it doesn't just look for $HOME though :/

Is there a distro that is a liveCD with MythTV on it. I have very little idea about linux, but would love to try it out. I have just tried installing livetv before and it beacme too difficult, but I now see the knoppmyth is around.

Im unsatisfied with Mediaportal and mediacenter. I want something stable but want to tst first.

thanks

Mark

TheNek, yeah there is two main stream ones available: knoppmyth and MythDora. I can't remember if MythDora acts as a LiveCD or whether it's just a distro with MythTV incorporated off a stock install, but I know KnoppMyth works as a LiveCD with MythTV.

hey guys

inspired by the new page article I thought I would give this a go. got a couple of questions.

using mythdora, radeon 9600, sempron, 512MB memory. using the xorg.conf.ATI that came with mythdora and when plugged into a monitor it worked fine but there is a BUT

but when its plugged in to the svideo on the card (to go to the TV), the desktop looks fine, the myth menus look fine, but the video looses the bottom 3rd or so, happens with both broadcast and DVD. also when running mythv setup it uses more depth than the TV has so I can't see the next/back/cancel buttons

EDIT: more info. The same problem happens with kaffine too, all video seems to get cropped about 2/3 of the way down its height. trying to find info on how X11 handles video overlay settings but coming up emty handed

EDIT2: if I switch OpenGL overlay on it works, and the video overlay is the right size and shape, but it does artifact a little.

any ideas?

I'm not really much help, but I'd like to add that I had the exact same issues with the closed-source ATI drivers. I eventually just moved to the open source drivers, and things worked much better.
