Anybody got a new gen 3 Intel chip running Ubuntu? I'm interested to hear about the function (or non-function) of the HD 4000 video.

I'm looking at getting an i5-3570K and making an 'everything box'. It's a shame there is no VT-d, but there never is in i5...
As I'm posting here, the 'everything box' would be doing FE + BE mythtv roles, as part of it's service. Is it going to be good enough without the Nvidia card assist?

Do you mean Ivy Bridge?

(Reason I ask is I have only tried Sandy Bridge integrated graphics)

It'll work fine, however I don't know if Intel have addressed the playback framerate of video only working at absolute values, eg: 30fps instead of 29.97fps, that affected previous releases, causing an occasional jitter in playback.

Yep, HD4000 in the i5-3570K instead of the HD3000 found in the i5-2500K, there is only $20 difference between the CPUs.

Yes I did experience that a while back, when I tried a m-itx build with a little i3-530. I was kinda hoping leaps and bounds to have occurred since then.

Default PlayTV tuners

Hi all,

Having some troubles with my sony playTV tuners on the myth backend.

There are three units connected via a four way splitter (the fourth output goes to an older set top box, still connected more for balance than anything)

Just lately I have started to miss a few recordings, that from the mythbackend logs appear to be tuning issues.

Jul 9 20:36:01 Potter-Myth-Master-Backend mythbackend[30314]: I TVRecEvent tv_rec.cpp:1029 (HandleStateChange) TVRec(5): Changing from RecordingOnly to None

The signal strength shown when changing channels is around the 76 to 78% mark. The signal strength was down in the 40% area prior to upgrading the antenna to a phased array type.

When using LiveTV I seem to get no signal lock quite often. I only get __L__ rather than __LMS or similar. Sometimes it is __l__.

If I navigate to one of the other sources, including the tuner on the same unit then all is well, but coming back the faulty tuner still cannot get a lock.

If I power down the backend and restart then all comes good with all tuners.

I have the backend (0.25 - fixes) set up as follows.

Tuners added in this order :-
Adapter0-tuner1 then
Adaptor1-tuner1,
Adaptor2-tuner1,
Adaptor0-tuner2,
Adaptor1-tuner2 amd finally
Adaptor2-tuner2.

Each tuner also setup to have 4 virtual tuners.

There is a Single video source called antenna and each Input connection is then set up to that source. Each is then named Adaptor1_1, Adaptor1_2, Adapter2_1, Adaptor2_2 etc.

In input connections I setup Adaptor1_1 to have priority of 1 for recordings and 24 for Live tv, Adaptor2_1 priority of 5 and 20, etc through until Adaptor 3_1 has 24 and 1.

This is intended to ensure Live tv and the Recorders use tuners from opposite ends so to speak.

So now to the questions.

Is any body else having issues with Playtv tuners not tuning,? I know a lot of people on here use them as it was this forum that convinced me to go this way (since the U3100's are hard to obtain).

Should I try removing one of the tuner units and only use a two way splitter and see how that goes? or maybe a masthead amplifier may lift the signal strength up.

Thanks in advance for any clues you can give.

I have contemplated trying one or more HD Home run units instead but it is an expensive exercise to try.

Test your tuners with the femon command in a terminal, eg: for the first adapter (adapter 0):

Code:
$ femon -a 0
...and you will get output similar to the following:

Code:
FE: DiBcom 7000PC (DVBT)
status SCVYL | signal bd15 | snr 0104 | ber 00000000 | unc 00000000 | FE_HAS_LOCK
status SCVYL | signal bcff | snr 00f8 | ber 00000000 | unc 00000000 | FE_HAS_LOCK
status SCVYL | signal bcf0 | snr 00f7 | ber 00000000 | unc 00000000 | FE_HAS_LOCK
status SCVYL | signal bd2e | snr 00f8 | ber 00000000 | unc 00000000 | FE_HAS_LOCK
status SCVYL | signal bd47 | snr 00f6 | ber 00000000 | unc 00000000 | FE_HAS_LOCK
And look at the BER column of output. It needs to be as close to 00000000 as possible. A value every so often is OK. Lots of non-zero values is bad - it means you have poor reception, interference, or your splitter is not working the way it should and is draining the signal too much. Make sure you are using a splitter that is "designed for digital TV", not an el-cheapo unit.

Repeat the tests with your other adapters by upping the numeric value in the femon command, eg: femon -a 1, femon -a 2, etc.

The femon command will show better results if that tuner is tuned into a channel at the time of testing.

Hi Andrew
I have had similar problems around a week ago with the lack of channel lock. I found that it was caused by some updates that I had installed. The next lot of updates cured the problem.
As for missing recordings I had a similar problem where i was missing recordings. after playing around found that the there was some issure with the number of recordings being alowed on each tuner. To test this I set the number of recordings from three back to one and havent missed a recording since. So far I haven't missed the lack of recordings per tuner due to the number of tuners and shows that I want to record. This only started after upgrading to .25.
I hope that this helps.
Also Hyrax1 I originally got my first myth box gonig thanks to your blog. Thanks for the instruction. I have had a lot of fun since. After reading this forum right through I suspect I must be about the same age as you father. I built a myth set up for my father whio is over seventy but it is going to take a while for him to get the hang of it.
Regards Ross

Hyrax,

thanks for that information I will try the femon command shortly and report back.

Ross,

today all looks good after an update so maybe it was the updates. As for the extra tuners, I will keep that in mind and give it a try if the first few steps fail.

I did get a distribution amplifier to try and the signal went to 100% but the BE value went to 65535 so can only assume the signal is now maybe too strong. Will try the femon command with both setups to see the difference.

Thanks again for all your help.

Andrew

Mapota has the error occurred repeatedly? or just once as my system did the same but it only ever occured once. I had the virtual tuners set to 4 I changed it to three and I have never seen another error. I dont know if I did an update around the same time or not. I know I removed my leadtek tuner as I thought it was the problem. It wasnt.
You can activate the inbuilt amplier if you want and see if it helps improve reception
Code:
options dvb-usb-dib0700 force_lna_activation=1
Just create the file /etc/modprobe.d/playtv.conf as above

No worries - glad it helped. One of these days I'll get around to writing a more up-to-date guide to suit current releases.

My folks love their box - they wonder how they ever got by without their 32TB monster server...!

I would concur with that assessment.

Also try testing your tuners one at a time (no splitters or amps) to rule out any general issues with them.

Checked many more lines than this and most are the same BER with at zeros, except for adaptor 5.

Over the weekend I will try some more tests. Its a bit hard during the week, too many things recording.

The last one adaptor 5 is the worst of the lot. As can be seen above. No errors on any of the others.

I think I will try to return the amplifier tommorrow.

Thanks again HyRax I appreciate the help

Looks good overall.

The fifth tuner might be experiencing some minor signal drain - try swapping it to another port on your splitter and re-test. The low values in the Bit Error Rate column indicate only a small number of errors in the data stream (they could also just as easily be caused by an out-of-alignment antenna or a windy day buffeting your antenna, however given the perfect score on the other tuners, this seems unlikely).

Ross,

today all looks good after an update so maybe it was the updates.

Hi Andrew
I found some info on another Forum suggesting that with .25 the tuners should be deleted and re added leaving the tuners with the default number of recordings. I have just gone through this process with my set up to test it. I guess I will find out over the next few days.
Regards Ross

I have found that some distubtion amps actually generate noise as well as amplifying the signal rather than the signal being to high.
With an analogue signal it is important to have a strong signal if not you end up watching a lot of snow. with digital it is more important to have a clean signal which is why all the digital hardware and co-ax are screened better than the older hardware.
Older types of co-ax are unsuitable for digital as well due to the poor screening and high loss due to the fact they were designed for low frequency (VHF). Digital is all UHF and the losses are greater in the cable because of the higher frequency. The minimum recomended Co-ax to use these days is RG6.

Ross,

I have RG6 Quad Shield cable from Antenna to tv with crimped F-type connectors every where they can be ie all but at the PlayTV tuners. All splitters are Hills brand as is the antenna.

So should be all good.

I also have good line of sight to the transmitter. I only thought the amplifier may be needed due to the number of splitters.

I reduced my number of tuners from four (4) to (3) this morning will see how it goes and watch keenly for any of your comments later.

Thanks

Andrew
