I'm not entirely sure what remote you're using, but if it's anything like my Twinhan then it should function just fine. There's a wiki article and a LIRC web site you may be interested in.
XvMC has done the trick, got the proprietary Nvidia drivers in via Automatix.
The remote does work, but I want to do some customising of the keys. Know of a good tutorial around using irrecord?
With my two Twinhan cards, I got two different remotes. One has approx 1.5 times the number of buttons of the other, and I want to use this "well-buttonly-endowed" one. I'm going to have to record the extra buttons and assign them to actions somehow.

Capturing the key codes is an area where I have no experience. However, telling MythTV/LIRC what to do with those key codes is rather easy. Take a look at an example .lircrc file and it's rather self-explanatory

Hi all,

I'm in the process of building a MythTV PC and I want to hook it up to my Foxtel cable unit, a UEC DCN1000 (it is a slim silver unit) which has a serial port and a USB port on the back of it. Does anyone know if you can control this unit via either of these ports?

I know that I could use an IR transmitter to control the cable box, but if I can control the cable box via direct USB/serial that would be better

Well, I called Foxtel and asked their technician, they told me that the serial and USB ports on the back of the UEC DCN1000 are both physically disabled, doh.

Guess I'll have to use an IR transmitter like everyone else, oh well.

Default lame

also if anyone knows how to set up lame librabry in ubuntu 6.06 too cos im getting
"You must have the Lame MP3 encoding library installed to compile Myth."

did a bit of googling to no avail.

also did a search in package manager and added stuff there but it didnt solve it.

help?

UPDATE: though i added all the lame components and dependances it seemed it needed
liblame-dev

which seems to be separate... hmm... dont get it...
had to add

# Christian Marillat's packages (mplayer, lame)
deb http://www.debian-multimedia.org sid main
deb-src http://www.debian-multimedia.org sid main

into source.list to get it too!

Why are you compiling MythTV from source? There are already binaries available for Ubuntu 6.06 from the repositories.

You'll be able to select your TV Tuner card in mythtv-setup. When you select a front-end, it'll list the capture chipset, otherwise you'll see "Device not found". If you've only got a single tuner card, it shouldn't be difficult to pick the right one

i've just used the wiki to install mythtv on ubuntu. i'm a major linux noob but managed to get it working. I only have my imon remote and the tv guide to get working.

I spent hours last night trying to get shepherd to work but can't it runs but only gets like 1 channel sbs news and I have nfi why it's not picking up anything else. Do I need to change the channel names in myth so they are the same as whatever shepherd is picking up?

Yea,
I'm stuck with getting shepherd into mythtv too. I did a

mythfilldatabase --file 1 7 /home/mythtv/.shepherd/output.xmltv

and can see the data, but when I check the guide there is nothing there. I changed the xmltv channel in mythtv-setup so they are the same as shepherd e.g seven.free.au , but still no good.

Edit: Can get some guide data in if I check the 'EIT' box

Cheers,
Ed.

You need to ensure that the XMLTV Id's you're using in Shepherd correspond to the ones you've defined in mythtv-setup. For taking data from the output.xmltv file and placing it in the MythTV database, I execute the following command as the mythtv user.

Code:
mythfilldatabase --update --file 1 -1 /home/shepherd/.shepherd/output.xmltv

I'm in the middle of putting together a Myth box and I seem to be having problems with 1080i HDTV playback.. My CPU is a 1.66ghz Core Duo. HD worked fine when I tested it in Windows so I'm not sure why it should be causing probs. Any ideas?

What sort of graphics card are you using? You should take a look at using XvMC which off-loads part of the decoding to the GPU and can achieve good results on lower end systems.

hmm.. its a Core Duo, i figured it was roughly equal to a P4 2.4ghz. anyway, i'll give XvMC a go.

Another thing.. How can I get MythTV to automically pad recording? e.g. start 5 minutes early and finish 10 minutes after the scheduled time.

Is it possible to control what deinterlacing method xine uses for dvd playback when starting from MythTV? Currently I have it starting using:

xine -pfhq -D -V xxmc --no-splash dvd:/

But the method it is using blurs some of the video and is a little annoying. I tried this but it didn't work either. Any suggestions?

You certainly can! Off memory, you bring up the programme guide and find the programme you're looking for. There should be "Scheduling Options", or something of that nature where you can set the recording to start earlier or later

If you're using MythTV 0.19+ it's possible to use the "Internal" player for DVD, Videos. I find this is a great solution for presenting a consistent interface. All the settings defined in the TV playback will always be used. However, in reference to Xine, I have no idea sorry.
