Default My dog stood on my laptop

My 20kg staffy stood on my Dell XPSM1210 laptop tonight, it was on the couch, and he got on the couch and put his two front legs on it. I turned around and saw him there, and slowly grabbed him.
No damage, not even any scratches
I estimate ~7kg of weight on the laptop, i'm not sure whether the magnesium alloy construction of the XPSM1210 was the saviour, or whether the matte texture of the lid is more scratch resistant than gloss, but i'm glad it's ok.

I think Dell Quality Control checks for this problem before shipping out the lappy.

What are you going to post when something really serious happens to your laptop?

so what, most modern laptops need a serious beating to break.

Reckon? If the laptop was sitting on the sofa cushion and the dog inflicted downward force on the screen of the closed laptop, then it would compress the laptop into the cushion and taking some of the weight/force, no? Therefore, the couch would make a reasonable difference, in comparison to the dog standing on the laptop if it was placed on a hard surface.

at the end of the day, if i wanted a tough notebook dells would be my last choice (below all the shitty ones you get at target for $799)

IBM/lenovo is where its at for everday durable laptops

Inspiron range would be my last choice too, but the Latitude and XPS range are worlds and universes apart in terms of build quality.

And yes the couch took some of the force away.

Thats not so true, just about any normal laptop u buy today will be much much more durable than laptops from a few years ago.

The screens are much less likely to crack due to the lack of glass and hard materials in the screen
the hard drive can usually now take around 30-60g of force while off or 3-5g while the hard drive is spinning.
The chasis these days are much better attached, and its very unlikely a small hit will break anything off.

would you rather me put 50kg of weights on your laptop while on the ground or on 50 pillows?

The couch soften the impact, but at the end of the day the weight of the dog still got transferred to the couch via the laptop. If the dog got on the laptop slowly, then the fact that it was sitting on the couch make a negligible different.

In the really end though... who cares? It survived that's the main thing.

Yeah but my laptop XPS magnesium construction, unlike Inspiron or other range.

By the way, my laptop is a 12.1" widescreen, so i'd say it's stronger cause less bending. If it was a 15.4" Inspiron 6400, i might not be as lucky.

PS. On another dog/laptop related issue, even more trivial/boring than the last; in the last few weeks i've been looking in the corner of my screen, right over the start button, and there's been what appears to be a series of dead pixels, and i've been thinking, i've got to get around to calling Dell for warranty fix. The other day i swipe at it, and it was just a dog hair stuck in the seem of the screen.
