Default Laptop around $1,500 -

So what laptop is good value around $1,500-

Thirteen inch or fourteen inch screen
I'll connect to my Samsung 19inch LCD

To be used as a desktop and only used stand alone occasionally so battery life not critical !

Performance close to a desktop ?

Asus F3JP

It's got a bigger screen than you want but if your not carrying it around who cares.

As Eric said, if you want performace close to a desktop and it won't be going anywhere, get a 15" lappy. You pay extra for 12"-14" models because of their portability and you'll have more options in the 15" market and better graphics card options too.

Thanks 'Eric' and 'McbLt'

What about speed ?
I currently have an over three year old desktop with:

Intel Pentium 4 2.4GHz 800 FSB HT
Intel D865 Pearl, P4 S478 CPU’s, 800 FSB
With 1.5 GB of RAM

What specification would I need in a laptop to match or exceed this speed?

Pretty much anything with a Core 2 Duo CPU and the same amount of RAM (or more) would beat that. What sort of video performance are you after?

From the Dell factory outlet:

Dell Latitude D620
Core 2 Duo T7200
Windows XP Pro SP2
80GB HDD
1GB RAM
8x DVDRW
256MB Quadro NVS 110M
14.1" screen

$1522

Dell Inspiron 6400
Core 2 Duo T5600
Windows Vista Home Basic
1GB RAM
120GB HDD
8x DVDRW
GMA950
15.4" screen

$1167

From Dell's main website:

Dell Inspiron 640m
Core 2 Duo T5500
Windows XP Home (or Vista Home Basic)
2GB RAM
120GB HDD
8x DVDRW
Intel GMA950
14.1" screen

Total is $1467.40

Thanks 'SLATYE'

Video performance required: Converting recorded TV shows to DVD (No gaming)

Of the three CPU'S

Core 2 Duo T7200
Core 2 Duo T5600
Core 2 Duo T5500

Is there much differance in the speeds of each
and would the T7200 be the fastest ?

What is the differance between 'Dell Latitude' and 'Dell Inspiron' laptops ?

Latitude - business line of laptops
Inspiron - consumer line of laptops

Latitudes tend to be a bit sturdier, and seem better tested (although I think you pay for it).

Inspirons are typically better value for money, and there is a wider range available (there is no 17" latitude, but there is an inspirion for example).

I'll second this one, I just got mine a couple of days ago and am stoked with it, needs to be bumped up a bit in the ram area though.

In that case, Intel's GMA950 would be quite adequate - although getting a laptop with a low-end dedicated GPU (like the Geforce Go 7300, Quadro NVS 110M, or Radeon Mobility X1300) wouldn't be a bad idea.

There is a reasonable difference, especially when you compare a T5500 (1.66Ghz, 2MB cache) to a T7200 (2Ghz, 4MB cache). In clock speed alone the T7200 is 20% ahead.

Latitude = business line; Inspiron = home line.

It'd be worth keeping an eye on the Dell factory outlet page. Check the Precision section too - they're pretty much Dell's super-high-end business laptops, and sometimes they do turn up for nice prices.

Sorry to hijack this thread a little but I"ve been looking at getting the F3JP for my fiance. We went to order one from pluscorp about 2 weeks ago but they had no stock due to the rerelease with vista. We were going to to get it for 1599 but now the prices have changed with the updated OS. Are people still getting this lappy for around this price ?

I've been looking at getting a smaller notebook as my inspiron 8600 is too big for general uni use and commerce seems to be in love with having everything on the Uni site. Is the 1210 any good? Is it about to get superceeded by a new model? I'd probably get it with 2 gig ram, a 7200 CPU and the geforce GPU. Anyone know how that would compare with my current setup, 2 ghz Pentium-M with Mobility 9600 Turbo?
