Default Guitar advise please.

Im wanting to get back into the guitar playing and need a little advise.

The kind of music I want to play is a mixture...heavy rock...pop and a little metal.

What would be a good guitar in the region of around $250.00 - $350.00

Perhaps something like this... http://www.allansmusic.com.au/defaul...tCode=AG131TRD ?

I want to couple it with an effects processor like the Behringer V-Amp 2 or the Pod series.

Any thoughts or suggestions..all up I want to spend about $1000.00

Guitar $250.00 / V-Amp $199.00 and the rest for an amp.

Does the type of pick ups determine what style of music? From what I have read the humbuckers give the cleanest sound.

- Humbuckers are better at dodging interference (or 'bucking hum', if you like) than single coils, but don't sound as good when playing clean. The higher the output, the better suited to distorted tones.
- I wouldn't touch anything from Ashton with a ten-foot pole.
- You aren't going to get a quality amp for less than $1000, so for bedroom shredding just grab something small like a Roland Cube or Orange Crush and spend a bit more on the guitar.

I think that is some good advise re: a better guitar...would you have any suggestions?

http://www.allansmusic.com.au/defaul...ode=GRG170DXJB perhaps something like that?

You can already noodle a bit, no? I'd head to a store and play a bunch, see what feels best.

Don't get the Ashton.

Get a second hand Yamaha/Pacifica or something.

Actually if you're getting an amp and have a budget like that, why get the V-Amp? $500 well get you a good second hand guitar.

The V-Amp is a multi effects module that you can plug into an amp..or am I misenterpretting you?

Some guitars that you should look at:

http://www.haworthguitars.com.au/con...d=032-1200-XXX

http://www.haworthguitars.com.au/con...roduct_id=EGG4

(Which I actually have a 13 Year old MIA [Made in the USA] I might sell if you want to pay $600ish for it... Its the 62' Reissue, and its got some serious awesome wear on it)

Ibanez SA260FM (GOOD GUITARS) ~750 though..

Amps wise, you should be looking at about $400 for a good amplifier. Buying a electric second hand was never a sin, and probably not such a bad idea.

Look for:
http://www.guitar.com.au/amplifiers/...r/HK-EB60R.htm

http://www.guitar.com.au/amplifiers/...15vtad30vt.htm

http://www.guitar.com.au/amplifiers/...nd/cube30x.htm

Randall RX50D

If I had my time again and I could pick up good gear with $1000 and play what you play..... My combo would be (Prices from Guitars.com.au)

Hughes and Kettner EB60R (A absolutely perfect amp in my eyes) = $500
Schecter 006 Delux = $600
OR
This Telecaster (your choice for a fat tele or not (a humbucker in the neck))http://www.haworthguitars.com.au/con...d=032-1200-XXX

Put some more money into your guitar imo. You'll get no pleasure from playing a sub $300 guitar... $500 on a second hand guitar can get you a pretty decent axe that can last years incase you get into it. Plus if you don't, you won't lose much money (if any) when you go to sell it.

Also i'd grab an amp with built in effects. I absolutely LOVE my little VOX DA5. It's their take on the microcube and it sounds fantastic. Huge grunt too! I've even jammed with my mates using it (along side a jc-120!). Even the cube series of amps, mabye a 30watter would be perfect. Have a look around.

My current set up cost me about
$1400.
Roland RG40R $299
ESP LTD Viper 400 $650
Boss GT-8 $499

I'd definately agree on having a better guitar than amp/effects, because crappy guitars are very hard to play on, within days of getting my viper my skill easily doubled.

Well why not get just the V-Amp, and run it to a stereo amp or headphones instead of a guitar amp? That would be the thing I would do until I had more money, instead of getting an amp that I'd want/need to upgrade later, and putting a dent in my guitar budget.

i agree... for your budget you could definitely get something better, even if it is second hand. how do you feel about a squier standard strat? somebody in the for sale forum is selling one that pretty much fits your guitar budget exactly! must be fate

yamaha pacificas are pretty cool beginner guitars too... that was my first guitar and i've never regretted it. they're pretty cheap on ebay too - maybe around $200pp?

Yep as noted forget the Ashton. A slightly-but-not-a-lot-higher ($300-$500) priced strat, epiphone, ibanez or yamaha (among others) will own it. A guitar $500-$800 will in turn own those. A decent secondhand guitar at those prices will in turn own those.

The V-amp is an effects unit but it's best suited to recording, I think they sound best when used into headphones or recorded direct. Nothing stopping them being used into the front of an amp but then they also don't have footpedals etc. Then again the price is good, and you get plenty for that price and it'd be hard to mention any kind of clearly superior alternative for ~$200. Alternatively though you could get a practice amp with the most-common effects built into it.

I agree with getting a slightly better guitar. The nicer a guitar feels, the more likely you're going to play it and the more you play it, the better you'll get.
