what kind of problems are you having?

poor battery life? that'll be the battery

intermittent power connection (it flashes to going on battery to on power randomly) - poor power adaptor OR poor power connection on motherboard

Well at the start I had to take the battery and power out and wait a bit then put just the battery in and it sometimes works but the other day I forgot to put the PSU back in and the battery went flat and now it wont turn on.

highly likely thats a motherboard issue (common with acer aspire laptops).

grab a multimeter, plug the power adaptor into the wall and see if you get any volts across the terminals (of the DC bit, not the AC plug! )

very rare will you find a power supply dies on a laptop.

if its the motherboard is it very expensive to fix the motherboard as a place in the city told me it would cost $1000 to replace the motherboard.

yeah, if the motherboard is buggered, take the HDD and RAM out, sell the shell on ebay and keep the HDD and RAM or sell that seperately too, im afraid.

wont be worth getting it fixed if it is the motherboard - i hope for your sake it isnt!

for an acer or a dell notebook - yes, it certainly pays to get extra warranty.

dont rule out the PSU yet. if i still had an acer notebook id lend you one...can you tell us what the voltage and amperage requirements on your current PSU is? i may have something suitable lying around...doubt it but worth a shot

not so much on good brands like HP, toshiba, lenovo, et cetera

extra warranty on dells can vary depending on their purchase price, there is no definitive answer - however im damn sure the cheapest extended warranty plan costs at least 3 times more than yours would have.

You'll want Acer Part Number TP.PWCAB.11 RRP $110 if its the ac adaptor.

Give IT Services in Kent Town(Authorised Acer Repair Centre) a call on 08 8130 1010.

They might be able to suggest some things to try over the phone, or give you some idea of how much it will cost you to have them diagnose the issue.

Extended Warranties for Acer are usually around $299 RRP depending on the model

19V, 3.42A... around 1500 or so of the Acer laptops I work with use an adapter with the exact same specifications. If it's the adapter I'm thinking of, then if it is outputting the 19V then really the only fault left would be that it cannot sustain the 3.42A. This would be evident if you could turn the computer on while plugged in, but the computer would act like you're plugging the power in and taking it out every couple of seconds (constant acknowledgement beep, screen going from 'full power' mode to 'battery power' mode).

If you cannot get the system to turn back on from here, then it sounds like the mainboard could be faulty.
