Default Laptop Electronick Fixings

I've got a laptop here (it's a second hand, 2005 ASUS), and it's got some problem which is preventing it from being turned on (i.e. the power button does nothing). Some screw driving has been done, and it has been discovered that the power adapter, the socket in the body of the laptop, and even the battery charging circuitry is operating correctly. Multimeter prodding also indicates that the "on" button itself works properly.

At this stage it looks as though a little component has failed, presumably somewhere in the "switching on" circuit board. This is all a really rough description, because i have basically no idea what it could be - it was turned off one night, and wouldn't turn back on in the morning - and so i'm hoping to find somewhere that actually tests and repairs specific little bits, rather than just replacing the whole thing. The whole thing only cost $700 and is otherwise perfectly fine, but probably not covered by warranty anymore.

With the cost and (likely) minor nature of the fault in mind, can anyone suggest places that might be able to help, and anything/where to avoid? (generally, but also specifically in Tas). Thanks
