Default Should i wait for the Dell?

So im moving to Melbourne and cant see the point in taking over my entire system here as it would cost hundreds.

Being a Photographer and having a few spare lens's i could easily part with, One being worth 2 grand, well i figure i may aswell just buy a laptop.

Now i can get cost price on all laptops ( minus Dell and Sony )

What should i go for around $2500?

I do play games, not currently but in the future i def. will.

Should i wait on the new Dell laptops? Or is there somthing else more worthwhile?

Can get Asus/Toshiba/HP at Cost price.

All suggestions welcome.

Erm, this may be obvious, but if you're moving, aren't you already taking furniture etc with you? I moved from Perth to Sydney around a year ago, and it cost about $700 to move all my kit (about 12 boxes, a bed, computer, table, chairs, etc). If you're already paying that, the computer shouldn't add much...

Anyway, what do you want to do? What do you NEED it to do?
Is size a problem? Weight? Screen size?

As Critter said, more info is a good thing...

Laptops are very limited in terms of longevity and upgrade options, so if your planned gaming is over a year away, ignore it. Save the money now, and look at a new system then. Even if it's another laptop, it'll still probably break even.

Nope buying everything over there with the g/f

What i need the laptop for?
Gaming in the near future
But apart from that all everyday computer use.
Size wise id prefer smaller over larger.

Ill need a computer asap to keep in contact with my and the g/f parents and friends.
Also looking for jobs/real estate over there it would be helpfull.

Never bought a laptop before always been a PC person, appolagies if im not too good at describing what i want.

The new Dell just seemed like a very nice laptop, somthing along the lines of that i guess.

I'd wait a little bit and see what comes out in the Santa Rosa lines, that includes the Dell.

If you're a serious photographer - like it sounds like, I would suggest gettig something in the 13.3" or 14" line and grab at least a 20" LCD as well for editting etc, you'll find that 1280x800 will be too small for you.

If you're looking for a Santa Rosa gaming laptop you'd want an 8400M (ok) or 8600M (good) rather than the Intel X3100.

At the moment, the new Dell M1330 looks great in terms of hardware, just waiting on price to see just how good a deal it is. Zepto are doing a fairly beefy 14" notebook.

In terms of Asus, there's a W7S - 13.3", 8400M, 120gig HDD

Hrmm, you work for Dell? Think that discount could be shifted? I'm looking to buy in the next month or so (just waiting to see some 1330 reviews come out)..

+1 to McbLt's comments. One thing to note, though, as I've ordered one of the 14" Zepto's, and it's still about 2 weeks out (guesstimate there, as all I know is it was sent from Denmark two days ago), so if you're considering ordering something like it (ie custom built or overseas order) expect a few delays.

Reasonably good info on the various mobile graphics available, and the laptop sizes you're likely to find them in here. Aim for the high end of the Performance (in a 14") or Mid-range (for 13" or smaller) if you're looking at gaming or serious photo editing.

It's going to hinge on how long you can be without it for. If you can wait 4 - 6 weeks, you can probably order from the States or Europe (Zepto's based in Denmark) and get a high spec Santa Rosa lappy. Otherwise you're looking at low-end Santa Rosa or high end last-gen (ie run-out models).

I can definitely let you know about the 1330 when I get it, as I'll be doing a mini review on it.

Yeah Fatbob ordered one already and he will be getting it soon. So look out for a review from him, be good when he brings it to work and we can play with it

Sweet - any chances of trying out a few games? I don't do much gaming anymore, but i'd like a mini-renaissance i guess

I'm currently tossing up between the M1330, 1420, 1520 and Zepto 6224 (i think)

Ideally, i think i'd like a 14.1", but haven't seen a 13.3" so i'll no doubt drop by a kiosk when they come in to see how big it is IRL..
