Ok, so I'm either looking at:
PRO80JR ~$1650 * 14.1" *C2DT5500 1.66 *1GB ram *120gb hard disk * ATI x2300 * Vista Premium or F3JP ~$1600 * 15.4 " * C2DT5500 1.66 * 1GB ram * 80GB Hard disk * Nvidia x1700 *Vista Premium I know that the nVidia card is actually the better choice (in the F3JP), but I had a couple of other quick questions: 1. Is the PRO80JR an old model or somthing? Seems to have a different case/trackpad. (I personally prefer this case to the F3JP). 2. Anyone know if either of these are 2x512mb ram sticks, or 1x1gb?

they both have ATi cards actually.
the PRO80JR is actually a brand new model while the F3JP is somewhat superceded now...but its still the better buy.

Better buy just because of the faster graphics?
The x2300 will still run the less-than-brand-new games though right? (ie, BF2, C&C Generals, etc?)

x2300 is shite. akin to the geforce 6150 integrated, its not much better than ATi's current integrated solution (xpress 200m).
x1600/x1700 is much better even though its part of the 'previous' generation.

okay,
Well i got my F3JP today. Its the higher model with Windows XP Pro, 2GB DDR2, 120GB HDD, and all the bells and whistles. To start - this thing is FAST. my preliminary 3Dmark06 findings bring this laptop in at about 2050 3Dmarks, with about 1720 CPUmarks. My AMD X2 4400+ only gets 1600. Graphics wise, SM3 scored about 750, which is decent for a laptop, but nothing too great. This laptop runs C&C3 on low-medium with no lag, which is still very good. General desktop work is quick - not much more noticable than my X2 4400+, but its definatly not slower. Asus Bundles alot of crap with it though, some of which is useful. a 90 day trial of Norton Internet Security is garunteed to shit you up the wall, and i have only had it about 5 hours. Asus Have preconfigured this laptop with a 120gb HDD partitioned into approx 60gb C: / 40gb D: which is fantastic, as i just changed my documents to point to D: The partitions on the XPP configured Laptop are FAT32, but provided on the desktop is a batch file to convert both to NTFS using the convert /fs:ntfs command - so no data will be lost. just tried this myself and it works a treat, and its quick. Never having had a laptop before i dont know what to expect screen wise, but this laptop is about as bright, if not brighter than my samsung 215TW on maximum brightness, when plugged into AC, and seems a little washed out, but still looks okay. I havent really done much testing on it. Have only just set it up and run 3DM06. The OSD is very stylish, rather than your old style green volume bars, it looks very nice, and fades in and out. not sure what effect this has on performance, but i have noticed the OSD doesnt work well in games. A cute little switch on the front next to the lid catch enables and disables bluetooth and wireless, and bluetooth couldnt be easier to use. The laptop is pretty much preconfigred for everything like wireless and bluetooth, because upon loading up windows for the first time, it automatically detected next doors unsecure network (poor bastards!), and it was easy enough to add my laptop to my V630i SE phone and commence photo transfers instantly. So about 4 hours of configs, installs, and updates later - I have a very fast, very functional, very powerful laptop, and if i might say - a very happy me. My laptop cost me $2400 including the top F3JP model, Asus 3rd year extended Warrenty card, and came free with asus branded carry bag and USB optical mouse, which is just the perfect size. So all in all, this is a great laptop and a reccomend it to anyone who is in the market for a mid-high range laptop like this. Cheers

yea i got one of these a while ago (but only has 1.66ghz cpu
) and they really arent that bad, i suggest wipe the hard drive and then stick in the recover CD/DVD (not sure which one they use for XP, i got the Vista version) and just install windows, do not tell it to re-install the recovery partition... that is essentially what is on the CD anyways. u can try changing how the screen looks using their splendid vision software(or what ever the name is). i my self am currently using linux on mine, and will be installing XP in the next week (Vista is really not that good). also how good is your battery life, i find i can only get about 2hrs...well enjoy your new lappy, they are quite good.
