Question Laptop Hard drive 2.5" -> 3.5" adaptor

I have a Compaq AU3000 series laptop and I need to do a ghost image on it to restore windows back on but when I took out the hard drive, the connecter is different to my adaptor

Is there different interfaces with laptops like desktops with SATA and IDE?

I know such adaptors exist just not SATA to IDE, mainly IDE to IDE.

I should've explained myself better. I have a 2.5" -> USB2 adaptor already which I was going to use with the hard drive but upon taking the hard drive out of the laptop, the connection it used was different to the usual IDE connection that laptops have.

Does anyone know what this is?

That's very odd. Could you post a picture?

Notebook HDDs generally have one of three interfaces:

(1) SATA. This is exactly the same as desktop SATA, so you can plug the drive into a desktop system with no adaptor.

(2) PATA. Laptop HDDs use a 44-pin connector which handles power and data. Adaptors to connect these to desktop systems are cheap and easily available.

(3) 1.8" HDD connectors. These are like the PATA ones used on 2.5" HDDs, but smaller.

As far as I can tell, the Compaq 3000 series laptops are big desktop replacement systems - so they should be using standard PATA 2.5" drives.

This may be way off the mark, but perhaps the drive simply has an adapter over the standard connection? Many laptops have this, and I know it's tricked a few people who didn't know it had to be removed.

The hard disk says its a Serial ATA Hard drive... so having no experience with SATA drives, what should I get and is there a USB solution?

yeah thats a sata 2.5" HDD.

just get a SATA USB 2.0 external caddy or you can just get a SATA cable and plug it straight into your computer's motherboard...as it has the same connection.

If your desktop PC is reasonably new (anything from the late Athlon XPs onwards) it'll have SATA ports on the mainboard. You just need a SATA cable and maybe a SATA power adaptor cable (to connect the PSU to the drive). Total cost for those should be under $10.

If the mainboard is older, or if you just want to make the drive external, you can get cheap 2.5" SATA drive enclosures for under $20.

so which part of the hard drive do I plug the SATA cable into as well as the power cable? I haven't played with SATA before

Get the SATA cable and the SATA power adaptor and it'll be really obvious. There are only two connectors on the HDD. One is big, one is small. The SATA (data) cable will only fit on the small connector, and the SATA power cable will only fit on the big connector.

Yes, that is correct - as long as your mainboard has SATA ports. If it's a easonably new board it'll definitely have a few.

If the system is really new, or if it was built with top-quality components a few years ago, the PSU will already have SATA power connectors on it (easy to check that). If this is the case then you don't need the SATA power adaptor cable.
