Default What's the SMP scene like DownUnder?

Greetings folks!

Having just arrived in downunder, being a long time SMP supporter, I am wondering what's the scene like here in Australia? What's the typical configuration here? Also, where would one source for hardware in Australia?

Cheers!

I don't think too many people use SMP systems here. Its just too expensive. I'm sure pretty much every person in these forums would want a dual Athlon or Dual Xeon system, but price is a big limiting factor.

You can get dual stuff from OCAUs major sponsers, Computer Alliance, Altech Computers and Plus Corporation.

Hi,

What would be a typical benchmark figure for the following configuration?

MSI 694D Master-S
2 x P3 1Ghz
4 x 512 ECC

I paid less than AUD$1500 for the above 6mths back.

I'm running dual 866's at 900, so I'd be pretty close to you.

Have a look at www.goldcoast4wdclub.org.au/ben/benchmarks.htm

Check my PCDB entry for more info on my system; http://pcdb.overclockers.com.au/view...Web&page=stats

If your wondering about availabuility, it usually takes about an extra month to get the latest and greatest from america, that and the price is about double +10% for parts..

what exact benchmarks are you after?, just how one compares in specific performance?

Most ppl in these forums would be errmm... wasting their time with dual machines, as there is really very little that a dual can do(normal applications) quicker than a single with a similar amount of money poured into them.

However I may be going way overboard for what your askin...?

I think he means a benchmark price, ie. what he should expect to pay. Of course, I could be wrong.

Fodder is correct, I'm not asking about performance benchmarks, but price benchmarks as currently I'm having my hardware shipped in from Singapore.

It seems by your sig, that you are well sorted in the SMP department. I'm sure hardware bought in Singapore is less expensive than Australia where high premiums are attached to computer products.

I don't think there is such thing as typical configuration. Specs for systems are broad, from people running PPros to people such as yourself running dual P4 Xeons. That puts you in the minority here btw.

Just about any decent computer vendor could obtain products for your needs, but may vary in price and service.

Bloody huge list of vendors.

More and more of them are starting to stock dual boards, someone should have comparative gear to yours.

Like others have said, there's no real typical configuration, but with PC purchased over 6 months ago, most are PIIIs in the 700MHz-1GHz range. Currently, the most popular enthusiast-level SMP platform is the dual Athlon (or Duron), on either the MP or MPX chipsets.

To get an idea of pricing in .au, you could visit the following online stores:

http://www.eyo.com.au/
http://www.perplus.com.au/
http://www.auspcmarket.com.au/

These are not the cheapest stores, but neither are they the most expensive, and they have good service and returns policies.

Welcome to OCAU dude!!!

There isn't too many SMP rigs here on OCAU, as most people don't really have the "need" for them.

I run a dual pII 350, 192mb ram , 4.3gb UW scsi hdd, 24x scsi cdrom, 2x scsi burner, Adaptec 2940UW scsi card, Matrox M2 8mb, VooDoo 2 12mb and a crappo ISA sound card. In a full tower ATX case.

I also have a single c300a @ 450 as well, which i do most of my gaming on. My SMP rig is used for uni work mostly, web dev, application dev and so on.....

Btw, i'm only a uni student. When i can save the $$$ i'm going for a dual duron rig if i can get one @ the time.

I have no problems with taxation over the items I brought over, personally and thru cargo services.
