My main dev rig is (doing web dev)

A 1st gen MacBook Pro, 2.16Ghz, 2Gb RAM running a text editor and a Apache/PHP/MySQL test environment, using both the inbuilt laptop screen and a Chimei 22".

Next to that, a box running Windows XP, just to see how the pages that I'm building are rendering in various Windows based browsers

You just made my day

I've found for the sort of stuff I do (mainly interpreted languages such as PHP, Python and Ruby) a beefy cpu can make a huge difference, especially in Ruby on Windows (which is notoriously slow. Switching between this relatively bad 2.6Ghz Celeron and the AMD X2 4200+ or whatever it is (I cant remember the proper name), there is a huge boost in the startup time of the interpreter.

Add a Web Stack running inside a testing VM performance can get slow :|.

Also, I agree with the widescreen monitors / dual monitors statement - tending towards dual w/ widescreens. Why? Documentation on One Screen (If you need it), The IDE / Editor on the other.

Thats my (not very helpful) 2 cents
