Default Are you a console RPG enthusiast?

Well I've noticed that there's been a bit of discussion (albeit largely in the Games section) regarding RPGs, but they seemed to mostly concentrate on computer based ones. Stuff like Fallout, Oblivion, Diablo etc. made by western developers.

While those are great and all (heck, I know i've busted some mouse buttons over DiabloII), there really hasn't been much consolidated discussion for console based RPGs, which so happens to be largely Japanese based. Personally, I find these much more enticing, mainly due to development style and storytelling. Unfortunately with the PAL region being so suck, getting certain titles is a bit of a chore... but hey, that's what enthusiasts do right?

Obviously, PS2 is the major powerhouse in this genre at the moment. So, to kick off discussion, here's what my current collection looks like (Please excuse the blurryness in some of these, I'm not too used to these highpixel phonecams)

Of course you can see there's a few non-RPGs in there, so don't mind those. And ignore the Sudeki, that was a bad bad mistake :| Currently I'm playing through Shadow Hearts and Atelier Iris.

Anyway, enough chitter chatter. So I ask of you:

ARE YOU A CONSOLE RPG ENTHUSIAST?

Nice collection! I see quite a few raries, imports and mistakes (SaGa related )

Personally - Back in the day...yes.

SNES (TOTAL FREE TIME KING OF THE WORLD!)

Chrono Trigger (FAV)
Breath of Fire 2 and 3
Final Fantasy 6 (FAV)
Mystic Quest
Secret Of Mana (FAV)
Secret Of Evermore
Terranigma (FAV)
Terranigma 2
Lufia (FAV)

My mother gave away my SNES, and all my games, to an innercity kids shelter when I was overseas

PSX (The times when I had the time to play all of these through.)

Final Fantasy Chronology (3 and 5) (Import)
Final Fantasy Tactics (Import)
Final Fantasy 7 (FAV)
Final Fantasy 8
Final Fantasy 9
Jade Cocoon
Breath of Fire 3 (FAV)
Parasite Eve
Vagrant Story
Xenogears (FAV)
Suikoden (BEST GAME EVER)
Suikoden 2

And many more... Most of them got sold, stolen or borrowed permanently over the years. Its a shame - the PSX was the mecca of console RPGs.

PS2 (About when I started running out of free time)

Final Fantasy 10
Final Fantasy 12
Kingdom Hearts
Kingdom Hearts 2
Star Ocean: To the end of time
Dragon Quest 8

I didn't get into the strategy spinoffs like Disgaea. All of these games are unfinished and will probably stay that way unfortunately - when I take some annual leave I'm going to try and break that promise.

Jeez bear that's some collection. How much of it have you clocked, and how much still to get through? I'd imagine you'd have to clock up some serious hours on those RPG's!

Nice spot
Yes a few bad eggs in there unfortunately (.hack, that has to be one of the most overrated series, bordering on Action instead of RPG though). Haven't played through Romancing SaGa yet either.

Unfortunately I only started at around the PSX era, so the SNES stuff, bar the remakes, had pretty much disappeared. Still played the essentials like Chrono Trigger and Secret of Mana, but never got to collecting.

I think that calls for a Hopefully that shelter sold those games on ebay and funded a wii with it or something...

These are at the top of my to-get list (still haven't play Suikoden 3-5 solely for this reason), but I've got a sinking feeling that obtaining those will be prohibitively expensive. Didn't see a Chrono Cross in there, did you ever try that out? Awesome, awesome game.

Disgaea and the SRPG stuff are pretty good, but after playing through one they start to feel a bit similar (I played La Pucelle and a bit of Disgaea). They seriously chew up time like no tomorrow, since you grind and grind but the enemies can still kick your butt for free.

Not as many as I would like unfortunately Complete, I'd say a third? Although I've played through 3-4hrs of many more than that. Some of them are so damn tedious that it's a bit of a chore to continue (MagnaCarta, looking at you ), I generally come back to them a bit later on.

Just finished Dirge of Cerberus yesterday too (SHOOTAN!!! WOOOOOO). It's actually not as bad as people make it out to be But very difficult using the controller. And the voices....urgh

I played Chrono Cross but couldn't get into it - you can't improve on perfection

Suikoden I actually had to buy twice. The first time it was stolen, along with a 50% of my PSX collection that were in a backpack in transit. The second time it was "borrowed" by the friend of an ex, which was possibly the stupidest thing I ever did - the game fetches at the very least $100-$200 on eBay and still is to this day one of the best RPG's I have ever played. Period.

Bleh - I'm actually feeling kinda sad about it now. Oh well. I don't have much of my PSX collection left anyway - I lost most of it moving house multiple times, a ton of it was stolen by strangers/friends/randoms, I sold a bit, and the rest is history. FF7 is probably the one thing I miss the most - I had the original in pristine condition. Technically I should still have it somewhere but I have NFI where.

Suikoden 2 wasn't as good and I ended up giving it to my cousin because he wouldn't shut up about it.

SNES RPGs roxored my boxors. I stopped playing RPGs after the death of the SNES. No idea why. Maybe uni/work/kids and other time-eaters.

Illusion of Gaia (aka Illusion of Time) was one of my favourites:

Never finished it. I *MUST* go back and complete that one of these days. That, and half the list you have there that I never even started, but wish I had.

Agreed - Illusion was another one I missed. Brilliant Game.

They don't make the storylines like they used to. They either overcomplicate them or make them too cheesy.

Awesome stuff!

Freaky timing on the thread, I actually did a similar thing last week, since quitting work and a few weeks of nothing-time until the next lot I made a list of classics I either never got to play or haven't played in too long and have been working through it.

So far have done Chrono Trigger, Link to the Past and FF6 (All old favourites), and 1/2 of the jap DS FF3 remake, but I think next will be something new, probably DQ8, has been sitting there mocking me and my lack of spare time for far too long...

Anybody got a suggestion for which to do first though? Haven't played more than 2 hours of FF12 yet either, not sure which to aim for. Already tried Disgaea but looked WAY too time-consuming, even when that's what I was looking for, so I think that might be one to do gradually.

They are all pretty time consuming, personally out of "Chrono Trigger, Link to the Past and FF6 " I would go Chrono Trigger, still one of my favs.

I just had a look and I have one original PSX game left.

Final Fantasy 6. No box, no manual - just the disc in a folder.

I'm never lending out my games again!

I learned my lesson about lending games after some asshole who i lent my copy of Chrono Cross to dropped out of college and moved overseas the next day so i've never gotten it back

I definitely like console RPG's, right now i'm eagerly awaiting my copy of Persona 3 to arrive on my door step. can't wait

I used to have most of the US titles but my dad being an idiot threw them out along with my Amiga 500 and Commadore 64.
