Default Blue LED Keyboard Modification (basic)

Well, I've gone ahead and done my first peripheral modification. Nothing special, just replaced the boring green LED's in my Logitech keyboard with some high intensity blue ones.

The end result looks nice, and better complements the blue feature buttons and armrest of the keyboard anyway.

I put together a small instructional thing for anyone else who wants to do something similar, mostly targetted at newbies.

It does make a big cosmetic difference. Goes much better with everything else on my desk now - the original LED's really stuck out like a sore thumb. Blue fits much better with white/grey colour themes (keyboard and desk). Naturally, looks great at night too - raises a few eyebrows.

Dick Smith Electronics. Check out my webpage instructions (see first post for URL). There's information about the LED's catalogue number there.

All DSE's high intensity LEDs are on page 287 of the current paper catalogue - they've got red, yellow, green, blue and white in varying levels of blinding power.

Just noticed - the 3mm LED's used in my little mod project are NOT listed in the paper Dick Smith catalogue! But Dick Smith do sell them - see my webpage for a photo of the LED's info sheet.

I find that DSE high intensity LED to be a bit more expensive than Jaycar.

Is it? I've never compared the prices - how much are the Jaycar ones? Are they the same brightness?

If you can't get the LED's locally, you can order them from Dick Smith Online - just go to http://www.dse.com.au

Alternatively you can buy from Jaycar Electronics - http://www.jaycar.com.au or even RS Components - http://www.rs-components.com.au

Yeah I know you can buy online. But a credit card is needed for both jaycar and DSE. Not sure about RS as I havent been there before. I dont have a credit card....

But if u buy from RS expect to pay top $$$ for them. We deal with RS @ work and they are the most expencive comany i have ever seen. U pay the price because they have 200,000+ IN STOCK at all times. They charge $1700 for a Phillips 17" crt monitor :/

It's been done a few times already. There are a few websits with pics and instructions etc (don't ask me where, just google it).

From what I've heard/read, the blue led isn't as good as red for the optical sensor and it can/does have tracking problems. Might be ok just for low use desktop stuff, but gaming would probably suffer.

HyRax1: Good work

Ah, my boy. Time to apply for one. They're indispensable.

If you're worried about interest rates and overspending, then get yourself a Debit Card instead. Has all the features of a normal Credit Card (ie: they can be affiliated with Visa and Mastercard and thus used worldwide), but your "credit limit" is simply the balance of the bank account the card is tied to. That's what I use. No interest rates, no overspending. Safe and sound.

The Beast: Thanks.
