It sounds more like your video card driver is the problem than the resolution.

Download and install the latest video card driver.

Why dont you find out ?!

I am trying to help you, but you cant come on here and expect people to spoon feed you and have all the answers quick smart!

Why not try and use your initiative and find the answers for yourself.

From what you have seen, you can assume vista works fine on the standard windows driver (thats why you can only select the basic resolutions, if you look what its calling your video card it will be something generic).

But when you install the driver vista wants to load, which will be your old one, it all goes pear shaped.

So theres a good chance thats the problem, either that or when your video card is being asked to do higher resolutions its shitting itself.

1) I presumed already that the basic driver works or that having no driver works... cos areo didn't work in normal mde... and when i installed the new driver it didn't work...

2) When i go into normal mode vista wants to install the latest one off the website (i downloaded the latest 162 or something)... fro the nvidia.com and it said that the driver was already instaled.. so thats what vista wants...

3( What would cause it to die under the load of aero at 1680 x 1050? If so, then the gpu is dead... i haven't run a game in weekws... hence if it died.. it died without be knowing

I already know that.. i didn't need to be told that..all i want it to fix this quick...

If i can't get this fixed by 9.. i will pack it up and take it to a shop.... i can't afford to not have this comp.. but its better to be working that not working

Any ideas.. please

If the GPU died it wouldn't be working at all.

Uninstall the drivers.

Re-install them and set the resolution to something low and the REFRESH RATE to 60Hz.

EDIT: Wouldn't it just be smarter to write your fucking essay in safe mode instead of spending hours trying to fix this?

A few posts ago you where too scared to uninstall the video driver. You obviously do not understand how it works, and seem ungrateful for the help or advice that has at least allowed you to narrow it down to this stage.

Take it to a shop, or hope some other nice OCAU person gives you further advice cause i'm no longer interested in attempting to help you.

What you have done wrong is allow vista to install its own driver, this doesnt tafe effect until you restart, which is why its working until you reboot the driver takes effect and then your back at square one, and also why the driver you downloaded will not install.

What i would do next, is remove the driver in safe mode, if there is a driver cleaner program for vista this would be worth using aswell.
Boot into Vista as normal. Quit/Cancel whatever do not allow vista to install the driver it wants to.
Then install the driver you downloaded, leave all the settings as default,
if it says the driver is already installed try and force it to re-install if given the option. restart, and see what happens,
Still no luck the next thing to try would be an older driver.

I havent seen cards where the GPU died as such, but i have seen cards that will work in 2d mode and screw up when going into 3d mode.

So you could also trying disabling the aero interface after installing the driver but before you reboot.

IF you still dont have any luck, or direction to head in to fix it then you can work in windows as normal as you have found, just remove the driver, boot up and dont install the driver, or dont restart. Then you can work in windows just with crappy resolutions and all your programs etc will work as normal.

Lol take a screwy computer to a parts wholesaler?? That's a bit silly...

If you had bothered to listen instead of type incompetent dribble your problems would have been solved.

And it has been ages since Win98 too...

I have done all your advice.

Uninstalled driver.... tick

Installed vista default.... tick

got hit back to safemode tick

uninstall again tick

install my own driver off nvidia website tick

force re0install it tick

Change the gpu port tick

Would a complete format and reinstall work? COs i might as well do that. I'm backing everything up.

And i was joking about sending it to MSY...

Take it to the nearest computer retailer, and save yourself an dus the pain.

You do not have the skills to fix this so I suggest (nicely) that you stop trying, and if it really this important, just take it and pay for it to be fixed properly.
