Default stop explorer.exe running

ihave a file server with xp runing and a few shared files. the computer is only pentium 3 256mb ram. i was wondering if i could somehow stop windows explorer and any other things i don't need to start up. Explorer isn't in msconfig so is there some other way?

Maybe you could consider upgrading the RAM so that it'll perform better.

Apart from freeing up some memory, preventing explorer.exe from running (I dont know if its possible btw) will preventing you from using the UI to mamage the machine, how else will you manage security etc ?

If the machine is THAT laboured, more Ram is the easy solution and could be gotten uber cheap. If its a high demand file server and you really can't afford memory you might consider running the box with something like FreeNAS.

To disable explorer.exe for good, just install Linux.

kill the explorer.exe process tree from task manager once the box is logged in. Or you could just not log the box in, then explorer doesn't run.

create a batch file with this code:

Quote:
taskkill /f /im explorer.exe
save that batch file, then have it run at startup using the registry

start>run

mmc gpedit.msc

User Config>Admin>System

Custom User Interface = true

Just put the path of some exe (or easier a bat file) that doesn't do anything there.

Or do what I do and just put cmd.exe there. Better to at least get the command prompt so you can startup other things if needed.
