Default New v6 clients in open beta testing!

http://forum.folding-community.org/v...ic.php?t=21311

The v6 client replaces the current v5 Linux and OSX SMP clients (which are due to expire).
Make sure you read the FAQ relating to the new client BEFORE you use it, there's important info in there.

The v6 Linux client is now universal, meaning a single client operates in both Uniprocessor and SMP environments (not automatically though).

The v6 OSX client is SMP only.

The v6 Windows client is Uniprocessor only, since the WinSMP client still needs more work.

Bah no new WinSMP. Might give the linux client a whirl though

edit: now running both a v5 and v6 on the same machine simultaneously (previously 2x v5).

also,

this will be very interesting indeed.

edit2: 2x v6 now

Nice work Stanford.

From reading the thread here - http://forum.folding-community.org/v...ic.php?t=21313

Backup your existing install of F@H including the work folder.

Install fah6.

When configuring client for an existing SMP install use - ./fah6 -configonly -smp

To run on an existing SMP WU use ./fah6 -smp

If it trashes the WU, use your backup install and run with the -oneunit flag

Had to change the router, so I decided it was time to do this change over. Went reasonably ok, did trash 3/4 of the instances on my 2 linux boxen, no big deal to be honest.

Created a passkey, not sure how it actually works. Used the same one for all 4 instances, wondering if it'll cause a problem later on.

From the v6 FAQ

Quote:
What's a passkey?
The passkey is a unique identifier that allows you to prevent others from cheating in your name. Obtain a passkey from our web site (see below), enter it when you configure the client, and the client and servers will do the rest. Previously we have not had such an identifier in Folding@Home (usernames for example could be shared by many people). You should keep your passkey secret. Please see the passkey FAQ for further discussion of passkeys.
More info here in the Passkey FAQ

So when subteams change to v6 they will need to share the passkey between members or not use one. But that leads to other questions in regard to the "bonuses" for using a passkey.

Quote:
Do I need to get a passkey?
No, you can leave it blank during configuration and the client will operate normally. But we will not have any way of distinguishing units you completed from those others with the same name completed, and you will not be eligible for any bonuses.

Is there an easy way to enter the passkey into the client?
Yes, you can copy and paste it from the email you receive from F@H. On Windows, to paste into the console, right click on the Title Bar, then select "Paste" from the menu that appears. It is strongly recommended that the client.cfg file not be manually edited, as it's not a plain text file and could become corrupted.
Quick configonly in the winSMP client and it has no section for it.

Unless I have misunderstood that and that's just meant for the terminal windows for the instance. Will be interesting to see these so called bonuses.

They don't have SMP for the Windows V6 client yet.

Also of note, we do not yet have a Windows v6 SMP client available for testing. Windows uniprocessor clients are available.

Stay tuned for more announcements in the coming weeks!
