Default Upgrading the version of windows that comes with laptops

I'm currently looking at buying a new laptop and so far as I can lots of them come pre-installed with a specific OS.

I use remote desktop a lot and both home xp and the home flavours of Vista do not come with it.

I was wondering if it was possible to upgrade from home xp to pro (less of a concern really, unless I get an older laptop on special or something) or from home Vista to business or ultimate. I'd post this in the windows forum, but it also occurs to be that the fact that you often don't get proper windows disks in favour of 'recovery disks' with laptops might also be a problem.

Also more specifically, does anyone know if it is possible to get dell to upgrade the OS of a laptop sold form the outlet?

Obviously if it's not possible to upgrade I'll just have to get a laptop that comes with the right OS but this seems to restrict choice somewhat, especially in the cheaper end of the market where I am looking.

Yes, you will just have to download the drivers from the manufacturers website.
