Default Worth Replacing The Motherboard.

Hey Guys,
I'll give ya the scope.

I brought the laptop i have off my Brother. Which is a Dell Inspiron 9300. Its fantastic but the only problem is when you put head phones into it, only the right channel plays. Then some times when take it out nothing comes out of the speakers. To fix it. I just play around with the out side of the headphone jack.

I rang Dell to see if they could fix it and they only told me that i had to replace the whole motherboard. They reackon it would roughly be about 600 bucks. So my question to you is. Is it worth getting fixed ??

sounds like a busted jack

if you know what you are doing... you can resolder/replace the audio jack

otherwise, USB or PCX/PCMCIA sound card (forget what a 9300 has)

I wont pay $600 just to get the micphone fixed, you can easily buy a new laptop with reasonable performance for around $600, please check msy, they have a $699 acer laptop with 1y warranty.

If you really want to do it cheaply, and if you don't mind waiting a bit (probably about two weeks), you can get a generic USB soundcard for less than $5 here.

As has been mentioned, this is almost certainly just a busted headphone jack. If you're good with a soldering iron you could fix it easily - but I'd probably just stick with the USB soundcard for safety.

OK guys well i got the dell manuals and we've full stripped the laptop.
I can't believe how many parts there are and i sorta feel like a bomb tech. Cause one bad move could mean.. bye bye.

We might have found the problem with a small gold plate that moves when you put the headphones in. So were probably going to move it a bit and see what happens...

Well here is some more news.

We just found a small crack in the solder to the headphone port. See as you push the headphone jack in it moves the small gold part cross to join with the switch which inturn makes the speakers turn off.

So out comes the solder and we hope it fixes it......
