Default Recommendations for SFF hardware?

Looking to make a small form factor server.

The thing will be used to serve files to my home network wirelessly, so i was thinking of ramming a 500gb hdd in there. I was going to install ubuntu and put sshd up also so i could control the thing from my normal pc. Might watch some divx on it too.

It needs to be small, quiet, and cool as possible. I've never built an SFF pc before but i'd assume its similar to building a regular atx pc but with smaller parts. Apparently core2duo run very cool and energy efficient, so i'd like one of those processors.

I'm looking for recommendations of a kit or separate parts to make this computer happen! Looking to spend a grand or less.
