TELSTRA has emerged as the favourite operator to offer the hotly awaited iPhone.

Telstra CEO Sol Trujillo this week confirmed talks had already begun with Apple, which plans to launch the handset in Australia next year.

Mr Trujillo said Telstra would be interested in the device if it delivered an enhanced experience for their customers.

"The answer is simple: yes we'd be interested and we're exploring that option," he said.

"We've had conversations with Apple and a lot of others and what's interesting now is that everybody's now responding to the Apple iPhone.

"Almost every supplier has big plans in the next six to 12 months with their version of an iPhone in response."

The Next G network operates at the rarer 850Mhz frequency and requires specialised handsets.

Mr Trujillo predicted Apple would produce a compatible iPhone.

"The company they introduced the iPhone with in the US is Cingular and obviously we have a very good relationship with Cingular (now called AT&T)," he said.

Apple has sold more than 1.4 million iPhones in the US since its launch in late June.

AT&T, the exclusive operator, agreed to a revenue-sharing deal on all data and voice calls.

Figures reveal about 20 per cent of iPhones sold were unlocked by users who either had existing plans with competing networks or who lived in other countries, including Australia.

Mr Trujillo said deals struck between Apple and AT&T in the US, O2 in the UK, T Mobile in Germany and Orange in France - all believed to involve revenue sharing - would have no bearing on a possible deal between Apple and Telstra.

Apple Australia offered no comment.

In Other words,

If the iPhone is UMTS 850, and Telstra don't have to revenue share, they will sell it.

Meh when it comes to Australia at a reasonable price and other competitors like Nokia, Samsung , Motorola haven’t released their iphone killers..then i may consider getting one, or even try and get an Australian one unlocked.

It going to close to 8 months before we see them on the market here i would say, even longer for the prices to drop to something reasonable..in those 8 months so much can change in the mobile world..by the time its here there will be a new version in the states

Why not? One monopolistic rip off merchant together with another. Perfect

AFAIK apple stipulates that the mobile carrier must have the iPhone on a plan with unlimited data, otherwise it renders many of the iphones features useless (unless you have the $$$).

Still, I'm a little dissapointed if they do end up going with telstra - they'll manage to find a way to screw everyone no matter what.

Telstra is really the only option though, all the others have substandard coverage.

I disagree with that, having used both NextG and Vodafone's HSDPA offering quite a bit, Vodafone's coverage is fantastic. I guess Vodafone might not work at upper Woop Woop but in my travels around Melbourne and Sydney (and in fact driving between them), I was very impressed.

I think that Telstra will take iPhone as is, on the basis that a 3G 850Mhz iPhone is on the way.

Like the new hiptop and BlackBerries, Telstra are still taking GSM handsets, but not for much longer.

I will only consider it if it goes Next G. Still, its a pretty sub-par phone in regards to features.

Yet it has FEATURES that no other phone has too.... if your a mad phone g33k the iPhone may lack some features you might not be able to live without but it is a pretty cool phone non the less and I am going buying one if Telstra bring it out as a second phone along to go with my work phone..

Not everyone lives in Melbourne or Sydney buddy, vodaphone and optus are basically useless in Tasmania, and I'm guessing its the same in the rest of regional Australia.

I love the Telstra bashers... I guess these guys are MS bashers too? I've used Telstra for 7 years.. never had an issue, never had "over charges", never had a billing issue that wasn't sorted out... NEVER EVER had a drop out, NEVER EVER had quality issues.

Had a 3G handset for a while (to test), was a pile of shit. Coverage was useless, dropouts, quality problems. Cousin has Vodafone, I hate talking to him because all I hear is static and drop outs. BRother used to have Optus, wasn't impressed with that.

Telstra on the other hand, I've walked into a carpark, into an elevator, out of the elevator on 3rd floor, into car, started car then hung up the phone. The person on the other end couldnt' believe I had done that, they were on Optus and said that their coverage could never do that (indoor coverage/elevator, etc).

I'm happy Telstra are bringin the iPhone here Hiptop on unlimited data for $30 is great
