Default Extremely slow internet as of last night

As of last night my cable internet (with optus) has pretty much slowed down to dial up speed. No I am not capped already, no where near it and only the start of the month. Basically everything that would normally take 10s to load would literally take 10 minutes to load/download now. My connection has been fine since forever until last night. For example if I were to load a video from youtube that would have normally taken 10s, it now streams the video in about 10 mins.

So I rang Optus tech support (5 times) and they went through all the connection checks and they said the internet was fine, and it was a software issue on my end.

Would could that problem be?

I have ran spyware, virus scan, disk cleanup, tried reconnecting modem - pretty much everything. And everything that requires the internet to run or has anything to do with the internet is slowed down to dialup speed. Even when I was updating my spyware, the update would normally take a minute, but instead it took around 5 or more mins.

Anyone have any idea what my problem could be? All of a sudden started last night.

Was it raining last night in Melbourne?

We've got optus cable, and every time it rains I get about 75% packet loss for anywhere up to the next 3-4 days.

I got the same thing last night, bloody annoying.

Our neighbours get it too, and optus refuse to do anything about it. Great service...

Yea it was pouring last night. Fingers crossed then that it will be fine soon cos I don't really think it's a software issue on my end like the tech support said. I have gone through all the software checks and don't want to resort to formatting.

Basically I can connect everywhere but it is extremely slow - dial up speed. Loading a vid from youtube for eg would take 30s in the past, now it would take 10 minutes. Basically cannot stream as I watch.

Yeah you have the same problem as me then.

We've plugged a single PC directly into the modem (several modems actually) and they still seem to think its our "network". They are morons and don't seem to understand that when every person using Optus in our street has the same thing wrong with their connection it cannot be the users fault or network.

I guess they are going the right way about losing customers.

Does it happen to you every time it rains?

Has never happened to me before, but yes it was raining heavily (pouring) last night in Melbourne. Has never happened when it rained in the past, heavily or not. I guess only time will tell if it's an international server problem.

Nearly everytime it rains. Sometimes I'll get lucky and it wont happen. But 90% of the time the net will cease to work sporadically.

This is even when trying ping the optus website so its definitely not an international issue unless they are routing our traffic via Uzbekistan.

Apparently something to do with a natural disaster in the US.

UPDATE: Preliminary Impact Statement:

On Monday 3rd December 2007 at 23:48 AEDT the Network Management Centre (NMC) received alarms indicating a loss of international capacity via the Southern Cross network.

NMC contacted Southern Cross who advised Southern Cross Cable Networks (SX) has experienced an unplanned network failure due to a tropical storm which passed over the Oregon coast in the Portland area. Heavy rain and high wind gusts have caused flooding as well as road closures and land slides in the area.

All major roads in the area are still closed due to felled trees or flooding, including the roads through Tillamook Bay accessing Nedonna Beach. The area continues to experience high winds and heavy rain which have affected landline and mobile services along the Oregon Coast. For safety reasons, the Portland railroad repair crews are staying in their depots until the storm has abated. At this stage the repair crew will not be dispatched for approximately 15 hrs.

Optus Internet Networks are looking into to re-distributing some of their traffic to share the load whilst we are working with Southern Cross to see if they can re-route our services.

Impact: Customers please be advised you may experience slows or congestion when accessing internationally hosted web sites. This is the result of a fibre break in the US caused by a landslide in Portland, Oregon. Confirmation has been received from the US that due to severe storms in the location of the fibre break, this issue will be ongoing for the next 14hrs. Work on restoring the fibre break will commence at daybreak US time. We apologise for any inconvenience.
