Get it rocking man

Do you know what your aiming for?

Plants? Cichilids?

Or just a range of easy growing plants and personality fish?

Danios + BN's / Cory's Loaches etc

Great stuff dood

As of two days ago I'm highly recommending the Ram style SA Cichlids, we picked up a few Bolivian Rams for my brothers planted 5 foot and they're awesome fish.

Lucky bastards are all juvies in a 90Gal 5 foot, 5 Angels, 12 Rummynose, 2 Bolivian Butterfly Rams.

A major point I took away from my research before getting in to Aquariums ~ a year ago was don't "start small", it's counter-intuitive but you need to "start medium" , small is much harder to look after.

Which AquaOne setup did you end up with mate?

Replying in your thread, I'm not great with lights but I'll see what I can do.

I am in favour of Cichilids, but the decision ultimately rests with my girlfriend, it's a present for her after all.

AquaOne 510 with stand, 75L I think.

Are there any freshwater crabs that can live entirely underwater?

Ah you can get little glass shrimp, you can get yabbies etc.

You have to be careful tho, wrong combination and someone is gonna get eaten!

Does your girlfriend know about the present?

is a good idea

Guarantee you'll be cleaning it though.

As for fish a few Mbuna Cichlids are colourful and interesting, but don't over stock, it'll look a little barren at first but as they get larger and more comfortable there should be plenty of activity. Some of it "arguments" but that's part of the fun.

But if you want a planted tank with lots activity and fish then get something small like neon tetra's, heavily plant it with Val, and that'll look very nice too.

Be very aware of the final size of any fish you intend to get, many common types that start of small and cute will outgrow a tank of that size inside a few years and if you've a bunch of them they'll put to much a load on the filter LONG before that.

The hardest thing with fish is NEVER to buy them on the spot, if you like the look of it, take the name down and go away and do some research first. Most shops will hold fish for you so there really is no excuse.

I don't believe so, but there's so many Corydoras there might still be a giant freak hidden in there .

But it's not just about size, even though most aquarium bred fish will tolerate wide ranges in water chemistry you don't want to be choosing at opposite ends of the spectrum, plus temperament is esp. important for those of us keeping Cichlids.

I've made a mistake with a BGK but learnt from it and If I hadn't researched and gone 2F:1M with my Ps. Elongatus I'd have 1 aggro surviving male and two dead fish, and no babies right now! Poor fish shop dude spent 40 mins chasing them around the tank til I got want I was after!

Yeah im thinking bout trading in my Clown Loaches for Cory's, just due to inevitible size increases and they are pretty full on regarding the bioload.

My 2ft tank will become my work tank when we move offices again next year.

Ohh and dont offer to hold the lid for them while they chase your fish, always ends up with you having a really fkn sore arm when they are shit at it!

I remember i asked for BN's, she spent 20mins purposely catching the borneo suckers and trying to charge me $20 for each, i said ... hmm nah better get the net out again

Always check what fish they catch, or ask for specific ones fish of a species. I'd rather wait an hour for a dominant fish to be caught than get a weaker halfass fish for the same price.

Never forget the day I bought my Green Sev, me and a mate had been eyeing it for a fortnight or so, I walk in and typically the lady (no idea what her name is actually, should ask) comes and asks me if I need any help. I say I'll take THE Green Severum (they've got about 15). She says "THE Green Severum! That guys a little champion", bags him for me and that was that. This guy was at least twice the size of all the others from the same spawn and was healthy active bastard, and obviously dominant. She was sad to see him go
