We actually kept her in an upside down 1kg peanut butter container. That allowed her to spread her web across side-to-side and we could take the bottom (lid) off to clean it out and put food in without disturbing her.
For food I caught grasshoppers, flies and such when I could.
When over fed she would bloat right up to an incredible size and when food was scarse her abdomen would shrink to the point it actually wrinkled.

No pics as she died about nine months ago but we managed to keep her for about 18 months. Just kept her in a dark spot next to the microwave. She was such an interesting pet.

I really don't mind spiders; they're pretty content keeping to themselves.

Nice pictures... Kinda scarey. My old neighbour died from a spider bite, I think it was a funnel web though. He was like the 7th person ever to die from one, so i think as long as you get anti-venom you're good... Still..

You never have just one redback, there is always 100's of them or none. Had an infestation under the house at my old place, scared the willies out of me they did.

Not to go off topic or anything but my grandfather actually produced the antivenom for the redback spider whilst working for CSL back in 1956 (http://www.ajn.com.au/news/news.asp?pgID=1640)

Actually injecting horses with small amounts of venom over a period of time and extracting the antivenom from their plasma is still done today for both snake and spider anti-venom.

Can't be bothered with another red back. Their "pen" just stinks when you have to clean it out and I'm in a fairly cold part of NSW in winter so food is pretty hard to find. Not worth the hassle really.

Might try again though just for shits and giggles. Hell it's better for the spider than a can of spray.

For the redback vs daddy longlegs debate, back when I was a pup there was a redback living in the gas meter door thing. I put two huge female daddy long legs in there and got bored and forgot about it.

Long story short a month or so later it's now a daddy long leg nest in there.

Yeah we're having an epidemic of them here which sucks because I've got a 3 year old daughter. She's pretty good about not touching them, even though she will often say it/they are her friend/s. I'll have to get our useless real estate agent to do something. Either that or stock up on that Mortein outdoor spray (which really does work as intended).

We also have wasps which sucks.

Oh and the other day my cat brought back what looked like a black bearded dragon without the beard (no idea what it really was). The thing was bloody huge and vicious as well. When I tried to pick it up it went ape and in the end I had to get a pillow case as it had quite a big mouth and was moving incredibly fast.

Pillow case = win.

Ah no.. I hate spiders.. especially the ones we get here in Darwin. They are so big, yet always seem to come from nowhere. I don't want spiders the size of my hand walking around the house thanks
